Dell Oro Group: Check Point, Fortinet, Palo Alto making gains in security appliances

There’s a continuing shift among the top security appliance vendors that has Cisco remaining at the top of the sales heap but with Check Point Software, Fortinet and Palo Alto Networks making gains and pressuring Juniper Networks, according to new research from Dell’Oro Group.

The research – which includes new data from the second quarter of this year as well as projections for next year and historical data going back to 2012 – has Cisco, with 24.9% of the network security appliance market as measured by manufacturer’s revenue, solidly in first place during the latest quarter. It is followed by Check Point (9.3%), Fortinet (8%), Palo Alto (5.2%) and Juniper (4.8%) to round out the top five.

Palo Alto CEO: Beware the Internet of Things – and watch your car

Corporate IT security pros need to consider the Internet of Things as a new and dangerous attack vector – oh, and we all should be particularly worried about the safety of our cars, says the top executive at Palo Alto Networks.

“You need to be completely rethinking endpoint security and you need to be seeking out technology that will actually prevent things at endpoints before [malware] lands,” says Palo Alto CEO Mark McLaughlin in a recent interview with Network World.

Palo Alto CEO on partnerships, platforms, the Internet of Things

Palo Alto Networks is introducing a service that tips customers off when it discovers unique or particularly dangerous attacks against their networks, giving them a heads up that perhaps they are the targets of particularly resourceful, dedicated adversaries.

Called AutoFocus, the service is an add-on to the company’s existing cloud-based service WildFire that constantly analyzes all its customers’ networks for malware and exploits and downloads new rules every 15 minutes to Palo Alto gear to automatically block the new threats it finds.
