Singapore Android users to be blocked from installing certain unverified apps as part of anti-scam trial

In a previous update of Google Play Protect, users were recommended to conduct a real-time app scan to better detect whether an Android app may be infected with malware. When the scan was completed, users were notified about whether it could be safely installed.

Eugene Liderman, director of Android security strategy at Google, told CNA the real-time scanning enhancement to Google Play Protect was fully rolled out in Singapore in November 2023.

Since the launch of real-time scanning last October, Google said it has helped identify over 515,000 potentially harmful apps, and blocked or warned users almost 3.1 million times when they attempted to install such apps.

Scam victims are often directed to download an Android package kit (APK) file through sources such as websites, messaging apps or file managers.

“Members of the public are advised not to download any suspicious APK files on their devices as they may contain malware which will allow scammers to access and take control of the device remotely as well as to steal passwords stored in the device,” the police said in an advisory last July.

Sideloaded apps typically ask for permission to read and receive SMSes and notifications, and grant accessibility to devices.

These permissions enable scammers to intercept one-time passwords via SMS or from notifications and spy on screen content, said Google.

The tech giant’s newest security feature is designed to look out for such permissions, which are “frequently abused by fraudsters”, and block the app’s installation.

“Based on our analysis of major fraud malware families that exploit these sensitive runtime permissions, we found that over 95 per cent of installations came from internet-sideloading sources,” it added.

Rochester Public Schools fixes internet glitch that blocked school board candidates’ website – Post Bulletin

ROCHESTER — Rochester Public Schools has reported that an issue with its internet security has been fixed, no longer blocking the joint website of four school board candidates.

The candidates

raised the issue

during a recent debate at the Rochester Public Library, accusing the school district of cancel culture and voter suppression. The candidates include John Whelan, Elena Niehoff, Kim Rishavy and Rae Parker.

RPS subsequently responded with a statement, clarifying that the candidates’ website was unable to be accessed since it was “incorrectly flagged on some RPS devices” as a “parked domain” by the district’s security vendor, Netskope. The terms refers to websites that are “in development or waiting for a new owner,” according the Google Ads Center.

As of Sunday, RPS said Netskope had reclassified the website as “education.”

Over 75 accounts of various social media websites blocked for fake, inciting content

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has identified 73 Twitter handles, four YouTube channels and one game on Instagram for fake and inciting content, and asked the respective social media intermediaries to suspend them, a senior government official said. As per instructions, these accounts have been suspended.

These handles had been identified after Twitter users tagged Ministry of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar, asking him to look into their content.

One such Twitter handle, sources said, was a fake video of a Cabinet briefing, in which audio from another source was overlapped on the video, the official said. Apart from these, an animated video showing violence against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other derogatory pages and posts targeting Hindu women were also taken down.

Earlier in the day, Chandrasekhar, after being made aware of one such post, tweeted, “Taskforce on Safe & Trusted Internet at @GoI_MeitY at work. Handles that tried to push fake/inciting content on twitter, youtube, fb, insta have been blocked.”

The owners of these accounts were being identified for appropriate action under relevant sections of the law, and the platforms would also be held accountable for their due diligence, he said.

Earlier last week, the MeitY asked the Indian Computer Emergency Response System (CERT-In), the nodal agency for monitoring cyber security incidents and related threats, to form a “a high-level committee” to investigate complaints that a website had hosted doctored, “lewd” pictures and objectionable comments “aimed at insulting Muslim women”.

Following instructions of IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, and other ministries, the Delhi Police has over the last week arrested four people, including a 21-year old who they claim to be the “mastermind” behind the creation of the website objectionable pictures of women were uploaded.

Doctored photos of at least 100 Muslim women, along with lewd remarks and comments, were posted online this week. GitHub subsequently removed the content, but many Twitter users tagged the women and posted screenshots of the…
