AT&T and Comcast today said they’ve completed a successful cross-network test of a new Caller ID authentication system, and they plan to roll out the technology to consumers later this year.

AT&T and Comcast are among the phone providers implementing the new “SHAKEN” and “STIR” protocols, which use digital certificates to verify that Caller ID numbers aren’t being spoofed.

Today’s AT&T/Comcast announcement said the carriers completed “an exchange of authenticated calls between two separate providers’ voice networks that is believed to be the nation’s first.” They called the test an “anti-robocalling fraud milestone.”

Comcast set mobile pins to “0000,” helping attackers steal phone numbers

A bad security decision by Comcast on the company’s mobile phone service made it easier for attackers to port victims’ cell phone numbers to different carriers.

Comcast in 2017 launched Xfinity Mobile, a cellular service that uses the Verizon Wireless network and Comcast Wi-Fi hotspots. Comcast has signed up 1.2 million mobile subscribers but took a shortcut in the system that lets users switch from Comcast to other carriers.

To port a phone line from Comcast to another wireless carrier, a customer needs to know his or her Comcast mobile account number. Carriers generally use PINs to verify that a customer seeking to port a number actually owns the number. But Comcast reportedly set the PIN to 0000 for all its customers, and there was apparently no way for customers to change it. That means that an attacker who acquired a victim’s Comcast account number could easily port the victim’s phone number to another carrier.

Verizon’s launch of 5G home Internet targeted four cities dominated by either Comcast or Charter, and Verizon says it will continue to bring the service to densely populated areas dominated by cable companies.

The launch cities that got Verizon 5G home Internet this week were Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, and Sacramento. Comcast is the main cable provider in Houston, Indianapolis, and Sacramento, while Charter leads the way in Los Angeles and covers part of Indianapolis, according to ISP tracker BroadbandNow.

That’s no coincidence. Verizon Chief Technology Architect Ed Chan told Ars that Verizon is focusing on using the $ 70-per-month wireless home Internet service to compete against dominant cable companies.
