Nigeria ranked as Africa’s second most cyber-secure country after Senegal

Nigeria has been ranked as the second most secure African country in Africa, behind Senegal. This was revealed in a report by India-based cybersecurity research firm, Indusface, as reported by TechCrunch. The West African country earned the spot after it successfully halted the Gamarue botnet- a very dangerous malware that had been a significant threat to corporate data and devices.

The cybersecurity rankings were determined using metrics like DDOS attacks, phishing and malware-hosting sites. Nigeria ranked second with an overall index of 74.69 out of 100. Senegal ranked as the continent’s most-secure country after amassing 78.09 points.

The research claims Nigeria has a low number of compromised systems per 100,000 internet users among other African nations evaluated. This yardstick acknowledges Nigeria’s successful advances to counter malware like the Gamarue botnet which primarily steals information, and performs other activities such as click fraud.

Honduras, South Korea, and Japan emerged as the top three cyber-secure nations, respectively, according to the report.

The Founder and President of Indusface, Venky Sundar, emphasized the need of addressing the security issues connected with remote work in the dynamic business environment. He provided individuals and organisations with six crucial pointers for boosting their cyber security in virtual office settings.

These include: determining which nations are least likely to be attacked by cybercriminals; comprehending data security laws like the GDPR; evaluating law enforcement resources; looking into government grants for cybersecurity; and analyzing cybersecurity knowledge among various age groups.

The investigation by the South San Francisco-based firm further discloses that 68% of high-growth global companies are capitalizing on hybrid work because of cost reduction, flexibility and recognition across the wider talent market. The adoption of these models by global companies is said to curb the lingering threats in preserving data privacy and network security outside the workspace.

Indusface found out that Finland and Belgium share the title of the most secure European countries for businesses to allow employees to remotely work from, each with a cyber security score of 82.45 out of 100.

Finland has received the second lowest number of DDOS attacks (79) during 2015 to 2021, only 29 attacks higher than France who has the lowest among the top 10 European countries. This is an important factor for businesses to consider as successful DDOS attacks could block your business sites and bring down all servers and connections you depend on.

Contributing to Belgium’s top ranking is that it has the  lowest number of compromised computers per 100,000 internet users (11) in the country. Computers that have been infected with the Gamarue botnet open doors to hackers and make it easier for them to take control of your business data and devices. Belgium also has the joint second lowest malware hosting sites among all top 10 European countries, with an average of 390 sites per 100,000…

Fortune has ranked the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s in-person master’s degree in cybersecurity as the No. 1 program in the country.

“We are proud to be recognized for academic excellence by Fortune and named the nation’s leading institution for graduate studies in cybersecurity,” said Pam Benoit, UAB provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs. “UAB’s Department of Computer Science has created an outstanding collaborative master’s degree program that prepares students to lead careers solving the world’s most challenging cybersecurity problems.”

According to Fortune, there are almost 770,000 cybersecurity job openings in the United States.

Fortune’s first-ever ranking of in-person cybersecurity master’s degree programs compared 14 programs across the country in three components: Selectivity Score, Success Score and Demand Score.

“I am thrilled to see this acknowledgment of our cyber security master’s program,” said Kecia Thomas, dean of the UAB College of Arts and Sciences. “Our students and graduates benefit from excellent faculty and a local community that is invested in their training and success.”

Collaboration for career success

Founded in 1967, the UAB Department of Computer Science provides students a collaborative educational experience and emphasizes important tools in the field of cybersecurity, including data science, machine learning and artificial intelligence. Cybersecurity students at UAB can take data science and ML/AI courses as electives, greatly increasing their skills and employment prospects. The program is interdisciplinary by design, and it admits students with a variety of undergraduate majors.

AIIMS Server: Hacking of AIIMS server raises serious questions about cyber security in country: Congress

The Congress on Tuesday hit out at the Modi government over the hacking of the AIIMS server and said it raises “serious questions” about cyber security in the country. AICC general secretary, organisation, K C Venugopal asked about Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s promise of a new cyber security policy which he announced two years ago.

“It has been a week since the server of AIIMS was hacked. It raises serious questions about the cyber security of the country. In 2020, PM Modi had announced that the country will soon have a new cyber security policy. It’s been two years and we’re still waiting,” Venugopal said on Twitter.

Services at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi remained affected on the seventh consecutive day, official sources said.

It is feared that data of around 3-4 crore patients could have been compromised due to the breach detected on November 23.
Patient care services in emergency, outpatient, inpatient and laboratory wings are being managed manually as the server remained down, the sources said.

The Delhi Police, however, issued a statement, saying “no ransom demand as being quoted by certain sections of the media has been brought to notice by AIIMS authorities”.

The India Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN), Delhi Police and representatives of the Ministry of Home Affairs are investigating the ransomware attack.

A case of extortion and cyber terrorism was registered by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit of the Delhi Police on November 25.

The official sources said internet services are blocked on computers at the hospital on the recommendations of the investigating agencies.

The AIIMS server has stored data of several VIPs, including former prime ministers, ministers, bureaucrats and judges.
