Mobile farmers market sees skyrocketing demand due to food insecurity, rising grocery prices

Ten minutes after closing time at the Fresh Moves mobile farmers market, a man approaches Timuel Jones-Bey hoping he still has time to shop on the shuttle bus before it’s packed up.

But the farmers market-on-wheels needs to make it to the other side of Bronzeville in time for the start of its next stop in just 20 minutes.

“We’re closed,” Jones-Bey says before adding, “but I’ve got a box for you.”

That interaction on a recent Thursday was repeated several more times over the next 15 minutes, with Jones-Bey never failing to leave a customer with an armful of fresh produce.

He knows or at least recognizes nearly every customer, and his conversations are filled with laughter despite the ticking clock. His knowledge of their personal lives fuels his desire to send each away with at least some fresh food.

“Some people have certain issues,” Jones-Bey said. “Some people have blood pressure issues, diabetes, stuff like that. So knowing that ahead of time, when they come when we’re closed, we’re still trying to help them and service them with what they need.”

Jones-Bey and his other workers were left with mere minutes to make it to the final stop of the day. A line of customers was already waiting for the brightly colored bus emblazoned with images of produce and smiling faces.

Urban Growers Collective’s Fresh Moves runs five days a week and makes several stops — all at least an hour — at locations across the city’s South and West sides, including South Chicago, Avalon Park, Englewood and Fuller Park.

“Server has been under the cyberattack of ransomware. Under the attack, all files are encrypted with eking extension and cannot be accessed. In a popup and stored file, the attackers are demanding Bitcoins Cryptocurrency for the decryption of the data. The attack was carried out on 21 June 2022 midnight between 12am-2am. The integrity of the data has been altered making it impossible to back up the previous data. The server works on the 24×7 internet line and the attack was eased due to absence of antivirus and outdated firewalls,” the complaint filed by executive engineer Sunil Karmarkar revealed.

The complaint was filed on June 24 but has come to light today.

The data center server located at Panaji was storing data of the flood monitoring system at 15 locations on major rivers in Goa to monitor flood levels in rivers as a part of disaster management in order to have a control on floods eventualities.

The data of flood monitoring system, automated rain gauges and weather gauges get stored in the server located at the Water Resources Department Headquarters in the state capital while the servers were being maintained by ASTRA Microwave Products limited, Hyderabad.

As a result of the hacking, the department can now no longer access its data related to battery voltages of different stations, data packets related to 12 stations, has lost all its old data which can now no longer be backed up locally and has also lost real time data of the rivers currently in spate owing to the ongoing vigorous monsoon activity across the state.

Oakland, SF Security Officers Demand Workplace Protection – NBC Bay Area

On Tuesday, more than 100 security officers from downtown Oakland and San Francisco rallied on Broadway in Oakland, demanding increased protection from their employers.

The guards work in office buildings and public facilities and they are asking their employers for recognition and to take responsibility through hazard pay and providing de-escalation training to deal with violent situations.

The security officers have experienced an increase in violent situations during the coronavirus pandemic linked to increased houselessness and the lack of needed treatment for mental illness.

“We need increased accountability from our employers in terms of what is the plan when you are dealing with a violent situation? How are our security officers supposed to handle situations with homelessness, with mental illness?” said Steve Boardman, communications director with Service Employees International Union-United Service Workers West, or SEIU-USWW.

There have been reports of violent robberies, being attacked by unhoused people when trying to clear them from an area, and violence and hostility as officers enforce COVID-19 protocols like the mask mandate.

“Officers have been attacked and assaulted and spit on for asking people to wear masks and enforcing pandemic rules,” Boardman said.

Boardman reported a security officer from San Francisco who was put in a coma for months after attempting to clear skateboarders from an area, as well as other confrontations leading to officers being hospitalized. One security officer was even killed on the job in Oakland.

The organization represents around 17,000 security officers statewide with a large concentration in downtown Oakland and downtown San Francisco. They are campaigning for the renewal of their contract and will be prioritizing increased protection.

In May, the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) proposed a draft regulation to prevent workplace violence in all industries. “Cal/OSHA coming in to expand these regulations is right on time,” Boardman said, and he hopes they move forward with the regulations.

“The employer shall establish,…
