Spinneys dismisses claims that ransomware group is leaking its data

Supermarket chain Spinneys dismissed claims on Twitter that a ransomware group had published data taken from its internal server.

A series of tweets by ransomware monitoring account Ransom Watcher on Tuesday said that the Clop ransomware group published Spinneys data.

“Spinneys is aware of unverified emails being sent out from unidentifiable email addresses stating that a ransomware group may have leaked data hacked from our internal server on July 16,” Tom Harvey, general manager of Spinneys Dubai, told The National.

“We continue to work closely with the e-crime department at Dubai Police to investigate the matter and keep our customers up-to-date.”

As more businesses adopt hybrid work models and undertake a rapid digital transformation to cope with coronavirus challenges, they are also more exposed to cyber threats.

Ransomware is malware that is designed to deny users or organisations access to their online data and files stored in computers or servers. All data is encrypted, and criminals demand payment for the decryption key.

More than 80 per cent of UAE organisations said they have the staff required to effectively manage a ransomware cyber attack, matching the global average, a June survey by Boston-based security company Cybereason found.

About 67 per cent of UAE respondents also said they have a plan in place to counter any potential ransomware attempt, compared with 72 per cent globally, the study revealed.

The main goal of Clop ransomware is to encrypt all files in an enterprise and demand a payment to receive a decryptor to re-access the affected files, according to a blog post by computer security software company McAfee.

Clop ransomware emerged in 2019, when it became a prevalent threat to organisations and businesses, according to cloud cyber security service company Mimecast. Clop ransomware also threatens to leak confidential information if no ransom is paid, it said.

To date, it is estimated that Clop ransomware has extorted more than $500 million from organisations, including multinational energy companies and at least two prominent US universities, according to Mimecast.

“Clop ransomware typically goes after assets like data backups, vouchers, email lists,…

Pentagon dismisses Donbas offensive as ‘anemic, tepid, uneven, and risk averse,’ as Russia prepares to annex the region

‘ANEMIC, TEPID, UNEVEN, RISK AVERSE’: The Pentagon is describing Russia’s halting in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas provinces as making “minimal progress at best,” with “minor gains” east of the northern cities of Izyum and Popasna, only to give ground back in the face of fierce Ukrainian counterattacks.

“What we saw there in Popasna is not unlike what we’ve seen in other hamlets in the Donbas. They’ll move in and then declare victory, and then withdraw their troops, only to let the Ukrainians take it back,” a senior defense official told reporters yesterday. “So, very, very cautious, very tepid, very uneven work by them on the ground, and in some cases, quite frankly, the best word to describe it would be ‘anemic.’”

In the past few days, Ukrainian forces succeeded in pushing Russian troops farther away from the northern city of Kharkiv, once Ukraine’s second largest. “They have managed to push the Russians out about 40 kilometers to the east of Kharkiv,” the official said, which is beyond the range of many artillery systems. “They’re pushing them back, so back into areas of the northern Donbas region, but away from Kharkiv, so an incredible effort there.”

“They’re still suffering from poor command-and-control, low morale in many units, less-than-ideal logistics,” the official said. “They still have not solved all their logistics problems, and quite frankly, there’s a casualty aversion, a risk and casualty aversion that we continue to see by the Russians now, not just in the air, but on the ground.”

RUSSIAN MILITARY’S ‘CASUALTY AVERSION’ LEADING TO ‘ANEMIC’ GAINS, PENTAGON SAYS

RUSSIA TO ANNEX TERRITORY AS FIGHTING STILL RAGES: Desperate to declare success before next Monday’s World War II Victory Day celebration in Moscow, Russia is planning to declare domain over all the Donbas, based on what the U.S. says would be sham elections.

“We believe that the Kremlin may try to hold sham referenda to try to add a veneer of democratic or electoral legitimacy, and this is straight out of the Kremlin’s playbook,” said Michael Carpenter, U.S. ambassador to the…

(CNSNews.com) – The Chinese government has slapped down criticism after several countries’ national Olympic committees advised their athletes not to take personal mobile devices to Beijing for the upcoming Winter Games due to hacking and surveillance risks.

Organizers of the controversial games defended the security of a mobile app which all participants and attendees are required to download and use. Expert researchers in Canada have raised concerns about “a simple but devastating flaw” in the Chinese-designed app, which will hold users’ demographic information, health and travel history, and other personal data.

Athletes from the United States, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Australia, among others, are being counseled not to use personal phones or laptops in Beijing during the games.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee advised athletes in recent months that “every device, communication, transaction and online activity may be monitored” while they are in China.

“Your device(s) may also be compromised with malicious software, which could negatively impact future use.”

The report said members of Team USA should consider taking cheap, disposable phones along instead.

With reports of similar advice from other countries’ national committees, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian was invited to comment.

“By raising the so-called cybersecurity issue in China, relevant countries, who are guilty of the charge themselves, are accusing the innocent party without any evidence,” he said, alluding to Beijing’s often-stated charge that it is the victim, not the perpetrator, of cyberattacks.

The Chinese Communist Party oversees one of the world’s most intrusive systems of Internet control and censorship, sometimes dubbed the “Great Firewall.”

As the coronavirus pandemic continues, the protocols for the tightly-managed Winter Olympics include a requirement that all participants download and use the “MY2022”…
