How hackers gained access to Minnesota Department of Education data

Cybersecurity attack hits Minnesota Department of Education

Cybersecurity attack hits Minnesota Department of Education

ST. PAUL, Minn. — A massive cybersecurity breach has exposed the data of government agencies and millions of Americans. The Minnesota Department of Education says it was one of the victims of the hack.

The breach at the MDE happened just three months after a leak rocked Minneapolis Public Schools. Officials say the latest hack is part of a larger effort happening around the world, believed to be committed by Russian cybercriminals, exploiting a data transfer program called Move It.

“The problem is that this application had a vulnerability embedded inside of it that no one realized, and now we’re seeing the clients of this vendor being hit by cyber attacks,” said Mark Lanterman, chief technology officer at Computer Forensic Services.

The MDE says personal information of more than 95,000 students was exposed, but no financial information. However, that doesn’t mean it won’t have a financial impact at some point

“This data has no expiration date. Okay, so your child may be a minor today. But in two years, maybe not. And maybe your child’s information will be used to commit financial fraud, identity theft, down the road,” said Lanterman.

The Minnesota Department of Education recommends accessing and monitoring your personal credit reports.

Hacking Attempts in the Education Sector Are On the Rise. Here’s How Schools Can Stay Safe from Cyberattacks.

Educational institutions are facing a surge in cyberattacks targeting IoT (Internet of Things) devices like IP cameras, network video recorders, and routers, according to recent data published by Check Point Research. In fact, the cybersecurity solutions provider states that there has been a 34% increase in cyberattacks when compared to last year. How can schools and other organizations stay safe from hacking attempts in the education sector?

Experts believe that schools and universities need to focus on vulnerability management. Basically, this process involves the continuous identification and resolution of potential weaknesses or flaws, such as bugs and firewall misconfigurations. These give hackers a chance to steal data and cause harm. Even something as simple as regularly updating software and installing antivirus solutions can help prevent unauthorized access to confidential data like the addresses and medical records of students.

BlueSteel Cybersecurity CEO Ali Allage, who has two decades of experience in leading tech companies, tells us how schools can stay safe from cyberattacks and institute better strategies against hacking attempts in the education sector.

Ali’s Thoughts

“So, my thoughts on the topic of the education sector seeing an increase in attacks is not surprising just because of how much the education system had to transition [during] and after covid on technology use. There’s been a lot of quick adoption without necessarily having the right frameworks in order to support remote education or adopting some of the technologies needed for today’s educational world. So, part of that is not having a grasp on vulnerability management, and this is using these tiny devices, like I mentioned [IoT devices] like cameras, [some] of these hardware pieces that sometimes get overlooked on firmware. Making sure that the software that goes to run the hardware are up to date. And, so we’ll see a lot in terms of vulnerability management not necessarily getting the love or attention it needs, or you’ll see that they’re identifying some of the issues — It’s just that the breadth of items that need to be addressed are pretty large and it could be…

UNO one of 5 schools grappling with internet security breach | Education

The University of New Orleans and four other Louisiana college sites were affected by a computer system “compromise,” leading UNO to shut down its campus internet Friday.

UNO announced the irregularity in a Twitter post, and identified the other affected schools as the LSU Agricultural Center, Nunez Community College, River Parishes Community College and Southern University at Shreveport.

UNO said it was working with the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness and Louisiana State Police on the issue. UNO said it shut down multiple virtual programs on campus, including email and learning platforms.

“Keeping our campus safe is our top priority,” one tweet said.

The compromise comes a month after Southeastern Louisiana University at Hammond reported a “security incident” and shut down its computer network. That lasted almost three weeks.

UNO spokesperson Adam Norris would not comment on UNO’s issue Friday night, saying the university will update its social media.
