Tinubu and Nigerian Army’s glorious era – The Sun Nigeria

It is becoming all too glaring that President Bola Tinubu is determined to turn around the fortunes of the Nigerian military for the better, in particular its most dominant force, the Nigerian Army.

In doing so, however, he must take copious notes from the different periods that can be termed as the Nigerian Army’s glorious eras.  The President should disregard the naysayers and pay full regard to physical achievements that have helped in shaping the army to the strong institution it has become today.

According to defence.gov.ng, “the history of the Nigerian Army dates to 1863, when Lt. Glover of the Royal Navy selected 18 indigenes from the northern part of the country and organized them into a local force, known as the ‘Glover Hausas’. The small force was used by Glover as governor of Lagos to mount punitive expedition in the Lagos hinterland and to protect British trade routes around Lagos. In 1865, the ‘Glover Hausa’ became a regular force with the name ‘Hausa Constabulary’. It performed both police and military duties for the Lagos colonial government. It later became ‘Lagos Constabulary’.

“On incorporation into the West Africa Frontier Force (WAFF) in 1901, it became ‘Lagos Battalion’. In addition to this force, the British government included the Royal Niger Company (RNC) Constabulary Force in Northern Nigeria.”

But narrowing this down to our contemporary history as a nation, no matter what anyone might say, the reality is that the era when General Tukur Yusufu Buratai held sway as Army Chief is the most glorious, given the unprecedented challenges of the time and the achievements made.

A well-researched piece published by ireporteronline.com, entitled “Promoting Professionalism: Major Reorganization and Modernization Under General Buratai’s Tenure,” captures that era as follows:

Preceding his appointment as the Chief of Army Staff by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, the military was losing its officers and men in large numbers. Thus, Buratai’s drive was to improve on the military’s operational achievementsWithin three months of his appointment, Buratai verified his leadership capability by…

BH Consulting CEO Brian Honan on the Importance of Data Logging and Monitoring

Brian Honan, CEO, BH Consulting

The lack of proper monitoring and logging can make it difficult for companies to effectively address breaches. Many companies do not have logs turned on or do not properly configure them to track and record what is necessary. Without logs, the response to a breach can be significantly slower.

Monitoring and logging also must consider privacy concerns because personal data could be contained in the logs, said Brian Honan, CEO of BH Consulting. He also stressed the need to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation.

“GDPR has brought data protection to the fore. It also has put more focus on cybersecurity as to how we protect that personal data,” Honan said.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2023, Honan also discusses:

  • The rise of artificial intelligence and its implications for privacy;
  • Potential consequences of data gathering;
  • Regulations and frameworks related to cybersecurity and personal data protection in the European Union and United States.

Honan is a recognized industry expert on information security, providing consulting services to clients in various industry segments. His work also includes advising various government security agencies…

Leadership In The Metaverse Era

University of Miami Digital Strategist, Institute SEI Founder, Revexpo Consulting Founder, CEO Softhread, Ethicist, Innovator.

The metaverse continues to not only capture the attention of various international organizations but also attract a high amount of investment dollars and act as a catalyst for the entrepreneurship ecosystem. While some experts consider it a concept and others see it as a movement or escape, the CAGR and market size it is estimated to reach clearly signal it to be a product and a service poised to disrupt the human-computer experience as we know it. The metaverse global market, which was valued at $22.79 billion in 2021, is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 39.8% from 2022 to 2030.

As defined by XR Today, the metaverse is a simulated digital environment that integrates VR/XR/AR and social media concepts “to create spaces for rich user interaction.” World Economic Forum describes it as a “future-persistent and interconnected virtual environment where social and economic elements mirror reality.” At this stage, multiple individual metaverses are being built; however, it is expected that they will likely coalesce into one global metaverse. Nvidia has also defined another concept and branded it as the omniverse, defining it as “an easily extensible platform for 3-D design collaboration and scalable multi-GPU, real-time, true-to-reality simulation.”

Global Drivers Of The Metaverse

There are several global drivers that influence the design and deployment of the metaverse, including scientific and technological advancements, changing population demographics, social and cultural reconfiguration and the rise of novel economies. An increased focus on upholding human rights and regulatory guidelines, as well as increased ESG-tied investments, are also at the top of the agenda for boards, C-suite leaders and key stakeholders worldwide. There are even several universities worldwide that are offering metaverse education such as AR/VR/XR technology skills.

While the digital transformation aspect is crucial for creating a viable business of the metaverse, leaders also have to balance all other competitive threats and expectations from…

Ukraine war has started a new era of global security: Adm. Bauer

TALLINN/ BRUSSELS — The Chair of the NATO Military Committee Adm. Rob Bauer said Saturday that the Ukraine war has started a new era of global security and underlined the Alliance’s continued support to Ukraine.

“Without a doubt a new era for global security has begun. It is crystal clear that this conflict is bigger than Ukraine,” he told a press conference at the end of the 2-day meeting held in Tallinn, Estonia, this afternoon.

“The entire international rules-based order is under attack. It is up to the free democratic nations of the world to protect it,” he stated. The Military Committee discussed how to sustain and increase NATO’s support to Ukraine.

“The ammunition, equipment, and training that Allies and other nations are delivering are all making a real difference on the battlefield. With its success on the ground Ukraine has fundamentally changed modern warfare,” said Adm. Bauer.

NATO will support Ukraine for as long as it takes, he stressed. The discussions of the military chiefs of the 30-member Alliance covered the breadth of the security challenges facing the Alliance, he said.

For the first time, NATO military chiefs welcomed their Finnish and Swedish counterparts around the table as invitees. The accession of both countries to NATO will enhance the security of the Baltic Sea region and strengthen the Alliance as a whole, he said.

The Committee also discussed NATO’s ongoing operations, missions, and activities including the NATO Mission Iraq (NMI) and Kosovo Force (KFOR).

The NATO Military Committee meets, in Chiefs of Defense level, twice a year at NATO Headquarters in Brussels, and once a year a Conference is held in a NATO member state.

The Military Committee convenes to discuss NATO operations, missions and activities and to provide NATO advice on how the Alliance can best address global security challenges.

Adm. Bauer on Friday conducted a country visit to Estonia, ahead of the annual NATO Military Conference. During his visit, he met with President Alar Karis, Minister of Defense Hanno Pevkur and Chief of Defense Lt. Gen. Martin Herem.

Adm. Bauer also traveled to Tapa to meet the 1st Infantry Brigade and NATO’s enhanced Forward…
