OSU gains $4.8M federal grant for cybersecurity students

If you are into computers and cyber-security, Oregon State University just got nearly $5 million of added incentive for you to learn there.

CORVALLIS, Ore. — If you are into computers and cyber-security, Oregon State University just got nearly $5 million of added incentive for you to learn there. The grant money will help students earn degrees in the field, if they agree to start their careers in public service.

More and more, computers are a part of our lives, from the way we communicate to the cars we drive and other things in between.

Along with the growth of the computer world, is huge job growth in cyber security.

To get more people trained in the field, the National Science Foundation gives grant money to universities to pay for students’ education and other costs. The expectation is that these students will then go serve in the federal government in cybersecurity roles.

Oregon State University professors Rakesh Bobba and Dave Nevin say 29 students will benefit from the university getting $4.8 million from the NSF, through the Scholarship for Service program.

In return graduates are required to initially work the same number of years for the federal government, as they received the scholarship.

OSU has the largest cyber-security training program in the state, which includes a live cybersecurity center. Training students by actually working with local governments and non-profits.

“Many of these jobs require experience and so the cyber clinic helps students gain that experience, so they’re more competitive for jobs when they enter the job market,” said Niven, who is the clinic director.

Once students graduate, they will find no shortage of good-paying jobs to go into, both in and outside of government.  According to professors Bobba and Nevin, there are 750,00 current openings nationwide, including…

Hacker Gains Access To Tractor Diagnostics With New John Deere Jailbreak

An Australian-based hacker known as Sick Codes has developed a new jailbreak for John Deere tractors, as reported by Wired.

Sick Codes was able to trick John Deere tractor touchscreens into thinking they were being accessed by a certified dealer. This allows access to machine logs stored on a tractor’s touchscreen computer, which can be used to diagnose and repair problems.

Further hacking involved using small processors called microcontrollers wired into the computer’s circuitry to to unlock more functionality. Sick Codes was then able to gain unrestricted root access to the tractor’s computer, allowing him to dive in, look at, and change anything at will. The work primarily focused on John Deere’s 2630 and 4240 touchscreens, which are among the brand’s most widely-used models.

The hack was revealed at a talk at DEF CON, a security conference run in Nevada each year. Sick Codes demonstrated his mastery of the hardware by showing the John Deere touchscreen running a modified farm-themed version of Doom.

Restrictions put in place by equipment manufacturers have often forced farmers to wait for dealers to step in to repair their tractors. Farmers don’t like waiting around during frantic harvest times, though, and often resent not being allowed to fix their own machines. Hacks that provide access to crucial repair features have thus become popular, while others have returned to using older equipment to avoid the digital lockouts on modern rigs.

Many farmers have called for “Right To Repair” legislation that promises them unrestricted access to the machines they’ve paid for. Calls are also being made to stop manufacturers from denying owners from warranty coverage if they choose to make their own repairs.

Being able to unlock a John Deere computer and get full diagnostic information will be helpful to many farmers. On the flip side, it’s likely the news will lead to John Deere fixing these security holes in future hardware. Thus, the to-and-fro between hackers and manufacturers will rage on for some time yet.

Russia moves to consolidate its modest gains in Ukraine ahead of symbolic May 9 deadline

RUSSIA MOVES TO EXERT CONTROL: As Russia has allowed a small number of civilians to evacuate the besieged Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol, Russian forces appear to be trying to lock in some gains ahead of the annual May 9 Victory Day celebration in Moscow, marking the surrender of the Nazis in World War II.

“Russian forces are setting conditions to establish permanent control over the areas of southern Ukraine they currently occupy, either as nominally independent ‘People’s Republics’ or by annexing them to Russia,” says the latest analysis from the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War. “Russian sources reported that stores in occupied Melitopol and Volnovakha are beginning to transition to using the Russian ruble.”

“Since seizing the southern city of Kherson in early March, Russia has sought to legitimize its control of the city and surrounding areas through installing a pro-Russian administration,” tweeted the British Defense Ministry over the weekend. “Recent statements from this administration include declaring a return to Ukrainian control ‘impossible’ and announcing a four-month currency transition from the Ukrainian hryvnia to the Russian ruble. The Russian ruble is due to be used in Kherson from today.”

Russian forces have also reportedly instituted an internet and mobile phone blackout in Kherson in an attempt to solidify political control.

“These statements are likely indicative of Russian intent to exert strong political and economic influence in Kherson over the long term,” according to the British intelligence assessment. “Enduring control over Kherson and its transport links will increase Russia’s ability to sustain its advance to the north and west and improve the security of Russia’s control over Crimea.”
