Rise of Zero-Day Vulnerabilities: Enterprise Software Now a Prime Target for Hackers With 64% YoY Surge


In the fast-paced world of cybersecurity, “zero-day” vulnerabilities loom as a formidable challenge for tech giants investing billions in enhancing user experiences. These vulnerabilities are mostly software flaws that developers fail to detect, leaving no immediate patches or fixes available to protect against potential exploitation. According to a recent report, “Google’s Threat Analysis Group,” the year 2023 witnessed a significant rise in the exploitation of zero-day vulnerabilities.

To be precise, the exploitation of zero-day vulnerabilities increased a notable 56.5% YoY, from 62 in 2022 to 97 in 2023. However, this number fell short of the record set in 2021, when 106 zero-day vulnerabilities were observed being exploited.

The surge in vulnerability exploitation suggests that hackers are becoming more aggressive and adept at discovering and using vulnerabilities to launch cyberattacks.

As these vulnerabilities are exploited, Commercial Surveillance Vendors (CSVs) emerge as key players in the cyber threat ecosystem. In 2023, CSVs were responsible for 75% of known zero-day exploits targeting Google products and Android ecosystem devices, comprising 13 out of 17 vulnerabilities. These CSVs specialize in selling spyware capabilities to government clients for surveillance activities.

Out of the 37 zero-day vulnerabilities exploited in browsers and mobile devices in 2023, more than 60% were attributed to Commercial Surveillance Vendors (CSVs).

Attackers have also increased their efforts to exploit vulnerabilities within third-party components and libraries. This strategy was chosen because exploiting these vulnerabilities could potentially impact multiple products simultaneously.

Threat actors across various motivations actively sought out vulnerabilities in products or components that offered broad access to multiple targets, reflecting a scalable and effective approach to launching attacks.

It is important to note that there was a whopping 64% YoY increase in the number of vulnerabilities targeted by hackers in enterprise-specific technologies during 2023. This trend was further evidenced by the widening range of enterprise vendors targeted since at least 2019,…

Hackers are loading SVG files with multi-stage malware in new phishing attack


A sophisticated new phishing attack was spotted in the wild, leveraging a wide variety of tools to bypass antivirus protections and ultimately deliver different Remote Access Trojan (RAT) malware.

According to cybersecurity researchers at Fortinet, an unidentified threat actor was seen sending phishing emails, stating a shipment has been delivered, and attaching an invoice. This attachment, however, is a Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file which, when run, triggers the infection sequence.

Price of zero-day exploits rises as companies harden products against hackers


Tools that allow government hackers to break into iPhones and Android phones, popular software like the Chrome and Safari browsers, and chat apps like WhatsApp and iMessage, are now worth millions of dollars — and their price has multiplied in the last few years as these products get harder to hack.

On Monday, startup Crowdfense published its updated price list for these hacking tools, which are commonly known as “zero-days,” because they rely on unpatched vulnerabilities in software that are unknown to the makers of that software. Companies like Crowdfense and one of its competitors Zerodium claim to acquire these zero-days with the goal of re-selling them to other organizations, usually government agencies or government contractors, which claim they need the hacking tools to track or spy on criminals.

Crowdfense is now offering between $5 and $7 million for zero-days to break into iPhones, up to $5 million for zero-days to break into Android phones, up to $3 million and $3.5 million for Chrome and Safari zero-days respectively, and $3 to $5 million for WhatsApp and iMessage zero-days.

In its previous price list, published in 2019, the highest payouts that Crowdfense was offering were $3 million for Android and iOS zero-days.

The increase in prices comes as companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft are making it harder to hack their devices and apps, which means their users are better protected.

“It should be harder year over year to exploit whatever software we’re using, whatever devices we’re using,” said Dustin Childs, who is the head of threat awareness at Trend Micro ZDI. Unlike CrowdFense and Zerodium, ZDI pays researchers to acquire zero-days, then reports them to the companies affected with the goal of getting the vulnerabilities fixed.

“As more zero-day vulnerabilities are discovered by threat intelligence teams like Google’s, and platform protections continue to improve, the time and effort required from attackers increases, resulting in an increase in cost for their findings,” said Shane Huntley, the head of Google’s Threat Analysis Group, which tracks hackers and the use of zero-days.

Washington Post Creative Group recently caught up with Todd Cramer, Business Development Director at Intel CCG-Business Client Platforms, to learn how Intel is enabling AI as a powerful new cybersecurity tool.

WPCG: Hi Todd. To start off, let’s talk about the threat landscape. Are cyberattacks becoming more frequent and sophisticated?

Todd Cramer: The threat adversaries are always getting better with their techniques, but so are the defenders in the software and hardware security ecosystem. For example, with ransomware, some of the traditional ways that attackers got in – you clicked on an email and it would drop a malware file to the disk of your computer – that’s easily scannable.

Now, these hackers understand how they’re being detected so they’ll do things to hide better across the computing stack itself. There’s something called fileless or malware-free attacks. What that’s doing is executing straight into memory where it can use that as a beachhead to set up persistence and move laterally across the host PC to achieve its ultimate objective … maybe ransomware or some other attack.

That’s also a technique that gives security vendors a lot of trouble because it takes a lot of compute horsepower to scan that memory and you can’t bog down the user’s compute experience to scan as much as needed….
