Tietoevry ransomware attack halts Swedish organizations

Finnish IT software and service company Tietoevry has suffered a ransomware attack that affected several customers of one of its datacenters in Sweden.

Tietoevry ransomware

The attack

The ransomware attack took place during the night of January 19-20.

“The attack was limited to one part of one of our Swedish datacenters, impacting Tietoevry’s services to some of our customers in Sweden,” the company noted.

“Tietoevry immediately isolated the affected platform, and the ransomware attack has not affected other parts of the company’s infrastructure.”

A Swedish news outlet The Local Sweden reported that the attack impacted numerous companies including a Swedish cinema chain and several retailers. It also affected financial and healthcare systems in the Uppsala Region, the Swedish State Service Center, and more.

The company has started and investigation and recovery process and notified the affected customers, but the services remain disrupted. It has not shared the nature of the impacted data.

“Currently, we are not able to say how long it will take for systems to be restored but we are laser-focused on resolving this as soon as technically possible,” said Venke Bordal, managing partner at Tietoevry.

“The incident is being investigated by both internal and external specialists, and as a ransomware attack is a serious criminal act, it has also been reported to the police. Tietoevry is on high alert and is monitoring the situation continuously.”

Finnish companies under attack

Tietoevry also suffered a ransomware attack three years ago, which affected 25 customers in the retail, manufacturing and service-related industries in Norway.

There have been numerous reports of Akira ransomware hitting Finnish organizations throughout 2023, with increased activity at the end of the year, but whether this attack has been perpetrated by an affiliate of the group is still unconfirmed.

Facebook says it halts hackers tied to Palestinian security

JERUSALEM (AP) — Facebook said Wednesday it has broken up a hacker network used by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ intelligence service in an attempt to keep tabs on journalists, human rights activists and government critics.

The report by the social networking giant threatened to deal another embarrassing blow to Abbas’ Fatah party weeks ahead of parliamentary elections. Fatah, plagued by infighting and public malaise, already appears poised to lose power and influence if the vote takes place next month.

In its report, Facebook said that elements linked to the Preventive Security Service “used fake and compromised accounts to create fictitious personas.” Posing as young women, journalists and political activists, they then sought “to build trust with people they targeted and trick them into installing malicious software.”

The malware, disguised as chat applications, would give the security agency access to targets’ phones, including contacts, text messages, locations and even keystrokes, Facebook said.

It said the ring, based in the West Bank, targeted people in the Palestinian territories and Syria, and to a lesser extent in Turkey, Iraq, Lebanon and Libya.

“This persistent threat actor focused on a wide range of targets, including journalists, people opposing the Fatah-led government, human rights activists and military groups including the Syrian opposition and Iraqi military,” it said.

Mike Dvilyanski, Facebook’s head of cyber espionage investigations, said the company had used “technical signals and infrastructure” to link the network to Preventive Security. He said Facebook had “high confidence” in its findings, but declined to elaborate.

In all, he said nearly 800 people were targeted. The company said it was impossible to say how many had downloaded the malware or determine what the security agency had done with the information. It said, however, that it believed the effort spread across other online platforms, indicating that there may have been additional targets as well.

Honda halted manufacturing at some of its plants around the world on Tuesday after being hit by a cyberattack that’s widely reported to be ransomware.

“Honda has experienced a cyberattack that has affected production operations at some US plants,” the automaker told Ars. “However, there is no current evidence of loss of personally identifiable information. We have resumed production in most plants and are currently working toward the return to production of our auto and engine plants in Ohio.”

Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday evening that production was suspended at car factories in Ohio and Turkey as well as at motorcycle plants in India and South America. The company, according to Bloomberg, was working to fix systems. The news outlet also said that Japanese operations weren’t affected and that other Honda plants in the United States have already resumed manufacturing.
