Tech world has changed dramatically since the White House last changed hands

Eight years is but a blink in the grand scheme, yet so much will have changed on the technology and social-media landscape between when Barack Obama took the oath on Jan. 20, 2009 and Donald Trump does so Friday.

Before he got started, Obama needed to plead and perhaps pull rank to keep his beloved BlackBerry, a gadget preference which at the time did not seem all that odd. Obama would remain loyal to the device, too, even as its popularity diminished, only relinquishing it last year in exchange for a customized smartphone that he mocked as more suitable for a toddler than a commander in chief.

In terms of spam, Donald Trump is beating Hillary Clinton hands down

As the U.S. presidential election nears, Donald Trump is emerging as the clear winner — at least when it comes to having his name used in spam messages.

Spammers and cyber attackers are using Trump’s name far more than Hillary Clinton’s in emails pushing get rick quick schemes or phishing for personal information, according to an analysis from Proofpoint.

The security firm scanned the subject line of emails received by its customers in June and July looking for occurrences of “trump” or “clinton,” and found that the Republican nominee appeared in 169 times as many emails as his Democratic opponent.

Personal health information in the wrong hands can be painful

Credit card data isn’t quite the mother lode it once was for cyber thieves. Not only is its useful life generally brief, it also isn’t worth as much as it used to be.

But cyber criminals are, among other things, adaptable. As Daniel Berger, CEO of Redspin puts it, “hackers are bad guys but good economists.” So they simply turn to something that provides a bigger bang for the buck.

And that, increasingly, is the data you voluntarily turn over to doctors, hospitals and health insurers, known as PHI, or Personal Health Information.

The Identity Theft Resource Center reported in January that of reported breaches, the healthcare sector had the most for three years in a row, with 42.5% of the total in 2014.
