Israel and Cyber Security: 2023 Forecast

As cyber security is becoming more relevant in warfare, Israel must focus on their own developments. Israel’s enemies, such as Iran, have their own coherent cyber capability. They can use this capability as a weapon against the Israeli state and its people. As Israel faces cyber attacks from Iran, improving their own capability will be a focus for 2023. Further, the cyber-dome will likely be the centre of attention.

Key Judgment 1. Because of the Iranian cyber threats and attacks against Israel in 2022, it is highly likely that Israel will be hyper-focused on cyber security development in 2023.

Key Judgment 2. It is likely that the development of the Cyber Dome over the course of 2023 will attract countries on the world stage, encouraging further cyber security collaboration between Israel and other countries.

Key Judgment 3. Although Israel’s cyber security developments are quite impressive and happening at a rapid pace, it is unlikely that Israel’s most hostile enemies, including Iran and Palestine, will slow down their efforts in their attempt to oust Israel.

Technion under ransomware attack | Israel Defense

The Technion, Israel’s prestigious technology research university, located in Haifa, has fallen victim to a cyber attack. The institution confirmed the attack yesterday (Sunday) on Twitter.

“The scope and nature of the attack are under investigation,” said the Technion’s tweet. “In order to carry out the process of collecting and handling the information, we are utilizing the best experts in the field, both in and outside the Technion, and are coordinated with the authorized authorities.”

The Technion also announced that, as part of the investigation, it has proactively blocked all communication networks. As of yet, its website is offline.

The attack appears to have happened between Saturday night and Sunday morning. Israeli press reports that an unknown threat group called DarkBit is behind this attack, and has demanded a ransom of 80 bictoin – the equivalent of $1.7 million, or NIS 6.2 million.

“There could be several reasons for the motivation behind stealing data from the Technion. The first reason could be political. Countries like Iran, China and Russia, for example, could benefit greatly from this data,” said Alex Steinberg, Product Manager at ESET. “In addition, the attackers might have wanted to steal the data in order to sell it to the highest bidder.”

In their ransomware note, the attackers seem to be asking for a large sum of money – but this could also be a disguise for other purposes.

“The cyber attack against the Technion has showed us, once again, how vulnerable Israeli organizations are to hackers– whether the motivations are financial or ideological, against the State of Israel,” commented Eddie Aviad, Deputy Manager and Head of Financial Solutions at Aon Israel.

“This isn’t the first time an academic institution in Israel has experienced a significant attack. As organizations holding extensive sensitive data, academic institutions are an easy target – this is because, unlike most critical state infrastructure organizations and commercial organizations that enjoy large budgets, the IT security system of academia, in most cases, isn’t strong enough.

“We should soon be hearing the question of whether the Technion was…

Israel: Former PM Bennett In Talks With High-tech Companies To Join Their Ranks

‘Bennett is going from time to time to meet with high-tech companies and others as well,’ his office confirms

Israel’s former prime minister Naftali Bennett is currently in talks with various high-tech companies to join their ranks after the November 1 legislative elections, according to Sunday reports.

On August 16, Bennett reportedly visited the company Talon Cyber Security, which offers a solution for secure access to applications and corporate data from any operating system. In early August, the company announced a $100 million fundraising round, despite the recent economic downturn that has hit the industry.

“Bennett is going from time to time to meet with high-tech companies and others as well,” his office confirmed, according to media reports.

“Nothing has been agreed upon, however,” his office continued.

Before he entered politics, Bennett had several years of experience in the high-tech industry. As a result, he has already earned more than $15 million, according to a study conducted by Forbes Israel magazine.

In 2005, six years after founding the Cyota computer security company with Dr. Michal Tzur, Ben Anush and Lior Golan, Bennett and his partners sold it to the US company RSA for $145 million, earning him about $5 million.

Four years later, he was appointed CEO of Soloto by entrepreneurs Yishai Green and Tomer Dvir, who developed a remote support service for personal computers and mobile devices.

Bennett also invested back in 2010 in Wisestamp, a start-up company that provides solutions for small business owners.

Shortly before he was appointed prime minister, over a year ago, he made at least $5 million from a public offering of the company Payoneer, which he had invested in 14 years earlier.
