The January 6 Secret Service Text Scandal Turns Criminal

As the United States midterm elections near, lawmakers and law enforcement officials are on high alert about violent threats targeted at election officials across the country—domestic threats that have taken first billing over foreign influence operations and meddling as the primary concern for the 2022 elections. In another arena, though, Congress is making progress on generating bipartisan support for sorely needed and overdue privacy legislation in the form of the American Data Privacy and Protection Act.

Iranian women’s rights activists sounded the alarm this week that Meta has not been responsive to their concerns about targeted bot campaigns flooding their Instagram accounts during a crucial moment for the country’s feminist movement. And investigators looking at attacks on internet cables in Paris have still not determined who was behind the vandalism or what their motive was, but new details have emerged about the extent of the sabotage, making the situation all the more concerning and intriguing.

The ACLU released documents this week that detail the Department of Homeland Security’s contracts with phone-tracking data brokers who peddle location information. And if you’re worried about Big Brother snooping on your reproductive data, we have a ranking of the most popular period-tracking apps by their data privacy protections

And there’s more. Each week we round up the news that we didn’t break or cover in-depth. Click on the headlines to read the full stories. And stay safe out there!

The Department of Homeland Security Inspector General told the Secret Service on Thursday to halt its investigation into the deletion of January 6 insurrection-related text messages because of an “ongoing criminal investigation” into the situation. Secret Service spokespeople have said conflicting things: that data on the phones was erased during a planned phone migration or factory reset, and that the erased messages were not relevant to the January 6 investigation. The Secret Service said it provided agents with a guide to backing up their data before initiating the overhaul process, but noted that it was up to the individuals to complete this backup.

TCL Rolls Out January 2022 Security Update To Its Google TV Devices

TCL has released a new software update to its Google TV-powered televisions. The company hasn’t published a detailed release note online, so it could be a minor update. A one-line release note on the TV itself mentions “optimize product experience and performance improvements,” which is a generic pointer for almost every software update. But considering the recent issues TCL’s 5-Series and 6-Series TVs have had, these optimizations and performance improvements could go a long way in improving the user experience.

According to 9to5Google, who first reported this rollout, the new software package doesn’t bring any “immediately noticeable” difference to the user experience. However, they have spotted that their TCL TV has been updated to the January 2022 Android security patch. It is the latest available SMR (security maintenance release) available currently. So the TCL TVs are now some of the most up-to-date Google TV devices in the market.

Of course, television sets don’t require as frequent security updates as your smartphone. Google itself doesn’t seem to care too much about security updates for its Chromecast with Google TV, releasing a new patch every six months or so. But it’s still nice to see TCL setting a bold precedent. Perhaps these small things are what set its devices apart from the competition, helping it sell more than ten million Google TV and Android TV devices in a year.

TCL had released a major software update to its Google TV devices last month

As mentioned before, TCL’s 5-Series and 6-Series TVs had a wide variety of issues early on. Users reported a buggy and sluggish experience, with a general lag in response. There were also other issues such as apps crashing and devices freezing, forcing users to unplug the TV. The problems were so grave that TCL temporarily stopped selling the TVs. Third-party retailers such as Best Buy also removed the listings for the TCL 5-Series and 6-Series TVs.

The company last month released a software update to fix those issues. It soon resumed the sales as well. Now, it is rolling out another update to further polish the software.

If you own any of TCL’s Google TV models, you should receive the latest update…

Samsung Galaxy S10 gets January 2022 security update

Last updated: January 17th, 2022 at 09:46 UTC+01:00

After releasing the January 2022 security update to the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21 FE, and foldable phones, Samsung has released the update to the Galaxy S10 series. The update is currently available in Germany, and we expect it to expand to more European countries over the next few days.

The latest software update for the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and the Galaxy S10+ comes with firmware version G97xFXXUEGVA4. This new software includes the January 2022 security patch that fixes dozens of privacy and security-related vulnerabilities found in Galaxy devices. Samsung might have also included general bug fixes and device stability improvements in the update.

If you are a Galaxy S10 series smartphone user in Germany, you can check for the new update on your device by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. You can also download the latest firmware file for your smartphone from our firmware database and flash it manually.

Samsung had launched the Galaxy S10 series in early 2019 with Android 9 onboard. The smartphones in the series received the Android 10 update in early 2020, Android 11 update in early 2021, and the Android 12 update a few days ago.
