9 Most Common Password Mistakes That Leave Your Accounts Vulnerable

What was the inspiration for the last password you created for an online account?

It’s human nature to reflect fondly on memorable events, dates, people or pets when it comes time to “fill in the blank” on a new account password.

But it’s those personal details that can get us in trouble when nefarious characters try to steal our information online.

Internet security company ExpressVPN recently conducted a survey that revealed many of us are making poor cybersecurity decisions by including our personal details in passwords.

In this article, I’ll explore the most common password mistakes people are making, according to ExpressVPN’s findings, as well as some other tips provided by the firm’s cybersecurity experts.

9 Most Common Personal Details in Passwords According to the Survey

Including personal details isn’t the only mistake you can make with a password, but it definitely is a common one.

According to the survey, the most common personal detail included in a password is a date of birth. That’s followed closely by other easily identifiable things such as first and last names.

The trouble with this, of course, is that an identity thief can easily compile this type of information on you and put it to use as they attempt to crack the code on your passwords.

And while it may not be such a big deal if they get the password for your favorite online message board, it could be life-changing — in a bad way — if they’re able to figure out a password to your banking, investing, Social Security or other pertinent personal financial accounts.

Here’s a look at the top nine personal details survey takers were using in their passwords.

Ranking Personal Detail Passwords Containing These Details
1 Date of birth 43.9%
2 Pet’s name 43.8%
3 First name 42.3%
4 Last name 40%
5 Child’s name 37.5%
6 Phone number 32.2%
7 Middle name 31.6%
8 Social Security number 30.3%
9 Ex-partner’s name 26.1%

Troop cuts will leave the Army at breaking point, says Lord Dannatt

“I’m afraid the future is not going to be returned to things pre 24th of February, the future is going to be a grumpy, resurgent Russia on the borders of countries in Eastern Europe,” he said. “We’ve got to play our part in deterring Russian aggression.”

Lord Dannatt added: “When it comes to old fashioned fighting, numbers do matter and to have an Army of only just over 70,000 30 per cent down from where we were 10 years ago is going to leave us woefully short if we find that we’ve got to maintain large number of troops at high readiness forward-deployed in Eastern Europe.”

Last week, Mr Johnson said the UK would boost its defence spending in the wake of the war in Ukraine, as he warned of a “very different era” of insecurity in Europe. However, his official spokesman also insisted that UK troop numbers were “the right size”.

The spokesman added that it was “wrong to focus solely on the numbers” and stressed that the Government was investing in cyber warfare and other new technology.

However, General Sir Patrick Sanders, the new head of the Army, warned last week that “it would be perverse” for himself to advocate for reducing the size of the Army “as a land war rages in Europe and [Vladimir] Putin’s territorial ambitions extend into the rest of the decade and beyond Ukraine”.

Lord Dannatt also said he anticpated that Russia would take Donetsk and Luhansk in the “next few days and weeks”.

However, he cautioned that in doing so Russia would not have won the war, nor would Ukrainians have lost. He said that instead, the war would go “into the deep trees”.

Changes in the composition of Twitter’s security team followed “an assessment of how the organization was being led,” according to a company memo shared with The New York Times.

Zatko, known by the handle “Mudge,” gained fame as a member of the Cult of the Dead Cow ethical hacking collective in the 1990s and later moved to top cybersecurity research positions at the Defense Advanced Research and Projects Agency, aka DARPA, and Google.

Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal, who took over from Jack Dorsey in November, also announced that industry veteran Rinki Sethi, the chief information security officer, will be departing in the coming weeks. The company did not specify if the departure is voluntary.

Sethi in a tweet confirmed her departure and said, “It is with a heavy heart that I announce my impending departure from Twitter. Thanks to all of you that have reached out to check in with me, I appreciate all the kind words, thoughts and love being sent my way.”

Neither Sethi nor Zatko responded to ISMG’s request…
