Misguided House bill could make cars less safe

Car owners could face more danger from hackers if a draft bill (pdf) by the House Energy and Commerce Committee (HECC) becomes law. The law would make independent oversight of the electronic safety of motor vehicles a crime subjecting well intentioned security researchers to a $ 100,000 fine per instance. Today’s cars have 200 – 400 microcontrollers and microprocessors in them making the access of each an individual offense subject to fines that could add up to millions.

The security flaws of the Jeep Grand Cherokee were exposed this summer by security researchers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek who were able to shut down the vehicle during operation by cracking the Wi-Fi password. The risks of huge fines would stop researchers from exposing critical motor vehicle vulnerabilities but it would not stop hackers with malicious intentions from invading vehicle control systems.

Parents more worried about online safety but doing less about it, survey finds

What are we to make of this survey data from FindLaw.com?

Seventy-six percent of 643 parents surveyed say they are extremely, very or somewhat worried about their children’s online safety, up from 64 percent in 2011. And the “not worried at all” contingent has been cut in half from 14 to 7 percent.

Meanwhile, 66 percent of those polled say they are taking steps to reduce online risks – monitoring, site-blocking, etc. — which represents a decline from the 74 percent who said they were taking such precautions four years ago.

More are worried. Fewer are doing anything about it. What gives?

My best guess: fatigue combined with a sense of futility.

Windows 10 build 10130 rolled out with slightly less ugly icons

Another day, another Windows 10 build. This time it’s number 10130, available now for fast ring users.

As Microsoft heads towards an expected July release of Windows 10, the changes between builds are much reduced, with a focus instead of fixing bugs and small refinements to the user experience.

The most visible of these changes is some new icons. Earlier Windows 10 builds included some icons that were, frankly, monumentally ugly. The new icons look somewhat better, as Microsoft is working to create more visual harmony between Universal Windows Apps and the rest of the operating system.
