Sally Beauty confirms second payment card breach

Sally Beauty Holdings has confirmed that hackers broke into its payment systems and stole customer card data. About a year ago the retail chain suffered a similar intrusion.

The company launched an investigation in early May after receiving reports of unusual activity involving payment cards used at some of its stores. While it now has sufficient evidence to confirm an illegal intrusion, the company declined to comment on the breach’s scope until the forensics investigation is complete.

Mandarin Oriental removes malware after payment card breach

Luxury hotelier Mandarin Oriental has removed malicious software that was used to steal credit card data from some of its hotels in the U.S. and Europe, the company said Thursday.

The security codes for the cards were not compromised, it said, although it wasn’t clear if that referred to the cards’ PIN (personal identification number) or the three-digit CVV code on the back. No other personal information was taken, the company said in a statement.

An investigation is underway by law enforcement and forensic specialists. An “isolated number of hotels in the U.S. and Europe were affected,” but none in Asia, the company said.

Home Depot breach put 56 million payment cards at risk, company says

The breach of Home Depot’s payment systems may have compromised 56 million payment cards as a result of malware that has since been eliminated, the company said Thursday.

Attackers used unique, custom-built malware to evade detection, the company said in an update on its investigation. The malware was present between April and September of this year, the firm said in a statement. Terminals identified with malware have been taken out of service.

The retailer confirmed in September that its payment systems had been breached at stores in the U.S. and Canada, though it did not provide many more details.

Home Depot investigates possible payment data breach

Home Depot said Tuesday it was investigating a possible breach of its systems holding customer payment information tied to credit and debit cards.

“We’re looking into some unusual activity and we are working with our banking partners and law enforcement to investigate,” Home Depot spokeswoman Paula Drake said via email.

The source of the possible breach, as well as the number of people who might be affected, was not immediately clear.

Home Depot is “aggressively gathering facts” and will notify customers immediately if it determines there was a breach, she said.

If there was, it would be the latest in a string of high-profile attacks this past year that have hit companies including Target, P.F. Chang’s China Bistro and Neiman Marcus.
