Sony: PlayStation Network is back online now, really

After giving gamers false hope on Saturday, Sony now says its PlayStation Network has been fully restored after a Christmas Day attack that knocked it offline for about three days.

At around 1 a.m. U.S. Eastern Time on Sunday, Sony declared its online gaming platform fixed and, as it had done the day before, blamed the problems on a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack.

“PlayStation Network and some other gaming services were attacked over the holidays with artificially high levels of traffic designed to disrupt connectivity and online gameplay. This may have prevented your access to the network and its services over the last few days,” wrote Catherine Jensen, Vice President of Consumer Experience at Sony Computer Entertainment America, in an update to a blog post she had published originally on Saturday.

PlayStation Network recovering after outage

Sony’s PlayStation Network is stabilizing after a suspected attack brought it down on Christmas Day and kept it unavailable for most of Friday.

The company announced early on Saturday U.S. Eastern Time via its Ask PlayStation Twitter account that its PS4, PS3 and Vita network services were “gradually coming back online” and by late morning the PlayStation U.S. support website showed the PlayStation Network status as “online.”

Hacker group Lizard Squad claimed responsibility for the outages that hit PlayStation Network and Xbox Live on Christmas Day, saying it had launched successful distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks against the Sony and Microsoft online gaming platforms. However, on Friday the group said via its Twitter account that it had stopped the DDoS attacks and turned its attention to Tor, a service that lets users surf the web, post content online and engage in Internet communications anonymously.

Attackers knock PlayStation Network offline for hours

Many gamers couldn’t access Sony’s PlayStation Network (PSN) for hours on Sunday evening after an apparent attack against the service. The PlayStation Store was also reportedly affected.

Sony Computer Entertainment America acknowledged the service disruption, saying via its official PlayStation account on Twitter that “we are aware of the issues some users are experiencing, and are working to address them.”

Several hours later the company posted a new message advising users who had difficulties signing in to try again, suggesting the service had been restored.

Some users also reported trouble accessing the PlayStation Store and receiving an error that read: “Page not found. It’s not you. It’s the internet’s fault.”
