Eastern and Northern Europe on the front lines of the cyber conflict

A new attack geography has taken shape over the last 12 months. At the very beginning of the conflict, the majority of incidents only affected Ukraine (50.4% in the first quarter of 2022 versus 28.6% in the third quarter), but EU countries have seen a sharp increase in conflict-related incidents in the last six months (9.8% versus 46.5% of global attacks).

In the summer of 2022, there were almost as many conflict-related incidents in EU countries as there were in Ukraine (85 versus 86), and in the first quarter of 2023, the overwhelming majority of incidents (80.9%) have been inside the European Union.

Candidates for European integration such as Montenegro and Moldova are being increasingly targeted (0.7% of attacks in the first quarter of 2022 versus 2.7% at the end of 2022) and Poland is under constant harassment, with a record number of 114 incidents related to the conflict over the past year. War hacktivists have specifically targeted the Baltic countries (157 incidents in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) and Nordic countries (95 incidents in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland). Germany saw 58 incidents in the past year, but other European countries have been relatively spared, such as France (14 attacks), the UK (18 attacks), Italy (14 attacks) and Spain (4 attacks).

How Check Point is keeping pace with the cyber security landscape


Having invented the modern firewall that enterprises still use today to keep threat actors at bay, Check Point Software’s founder and CEO Gil Shwed cuts an influential figure in the cyber security industry.

He wrote the first version of FireWall-1, the company’s flagship offering that became the world’s first commercially available firewall product in 1994, and patented stateful inspection, now a de facto standard security technology.

Under his leadership, Check Point has broadened its portfolio, offering a wide range of security capabilities from cloud and network security to a unified security management tool called Infinity that consolidates security capabilities into a single platform.

In a wide-ranging interview with Computer Weekly, Shwed spoke about how Check Point is keeping pace with the cyber security landscape, the company’s key growth areas and approach to cloud security, as well as how generative AI (artificial intelligence) will impact cyber security.

Could you give me a sense of the growth areas for the company, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region?

Shwed: I think the growth areas are almost unlimited because our business is multi-dimensional, especially in Asia, where not all the countries are in the same stage of development. So clearly, there is more potential everywhere.

For those in less developed countries, there’s plenty of potential to catch up and get to a reasonable level of security and those in developed countries will keep investing because they know how important it is.

In terms of technology, I think the real challenge today is from a product perspective. While we can sell more products to secure the cloud, networks and users, it’s important to create a collaborative platform for security architectures to work together.

Now, if you look at traditional defence, when a fire alarm goes off, we’re not going to sit around and say we don’t care. The doors will close, and we will all take care of it to make sure the fire doesn’t spread to the entire building.

The average cloud application has about 15 connections to other applications, and not all of them are owned by your company, so the risk level on the cloud is very high

Check Point teams with Intel for processor-level anti-ransomware security


Cybersecurity firm Check Point Software Technologies Ltd. has extended a collaboration with Intel Corp. to offer enhanced anti-ransomware capabilities for Check Point Harmony customers.

Under the collaboration, the Intel vPro platform’s threat detection technology will be available within Check Point Harmony Endpoint. The pairing provides enterprises with processor-level anti-ransomware security at both the hardware and software levels at no extra cost.

The problem being addressed is a well-known one: Cyber criminals are becoming more creative in their attacks. Check Point recorded a 42% global increase in cyberattacks in 2022, with ransomware identified as the No. 1 threat. The company argues that “prevention first” continues is the best cybersecurity strategy because once an attack happens, it can be challenging to repair the damage to the victim and its reputation.

The integration sees Check Point Harmony Endpoint tap into Intel’s Threat Detection Technology Technology, available on the Intel vPro platform, to employ artificial intelligence and machine learning. With the ability to use AI and machine learning, Harmony can analyze processor telemetry and recognize ransomware encryption commands early in the attack flow, raising the barrier against advanced threats, according to the companies.

Combined, the service strengthens prevention and security measures for customers, blocking endpoint threats with capabilities that identify, block and remediate the entire attack chain.

“The Intel vPro platform contains hardware-based security features, including Threat Detection Technology specifically designed to detect ransomware and other advanced threats,” Carla Rodríguez, vice president and general manager, Ecosystem Partner Enabling at Intel, said in a statement. “When paired with Check Point’s security solutions, customers can be confident knowing their endpoints are better protected at both the hardware and software layers.”

Check Point customers benefit from processor-level security that starts at the silicon level and provides anti-ransomware capabilities allowing for earlier prevention and expansive attack surface coverage.
