Ransomware threat to unis | Professional Security

For some, meaningful investment in cyber security only comes after some breach or incident. Prevention is always better than – and cheaper than – a cure. Hence a plea by Jisc, the UK body that serves higher education with cyber and other services such as the Janet IT network, for all senior leaders to engage with cyber security.

Technical managers need the support of vice chancellors, principals and their board members, who ought to have oversight and take responsibility for cyber security as a strategic priority, says Dr John Chapman, Head of Janet policy and strategy, at Jisc. In a blog, he introduces Jisc’s cyber impact report first published in November 2020 and this month revised (32-page pdf on this link) and updated to include anonymised case studies of more recent incidents that underline the increased threat of ransomware attacks.

In the 18 months between reports, the main development has been the sustained increase in ransomware attacks, he writes: 15 further education (FE) and higher education (HE) organisations were impacted by ransomware in 2020, a further 18 in 2021, and at least three so far in 2022. More than 100 UK schools have also been affected.

Ransomware attacks have evolved with more threat actors applying ‘double extortion’ methods, demanding a ransom to provide a decryption key and threatening to make sensitive data public if the ransom isn’t paid. There have also been instances where attackers have sought out back-ups, to hamper recovery and apply further pressure.

Despite financial constraints, it’s not all bad news in the report; it hails leadership awareness of cyber attacks as increased tremendously over the last few years and particularly since the covid-19 pandemic (that as in other fields, brought cyber and IT more to the fore as staff and students worked and learned remotely, using tech that had to be secure). A mass migration to remote working inadvertently opened institutions to attack by implementing insecure remote access, the report says; though institutions did speed up the bringing in of MFA (multi-factor authentication) as a control.

Institutions are becoming more prepared, the report states. “However, our work has concluded…

Against hackers with AI | Professional Security

The spiralling growth in hacking is costing business ‘big time’, writes Colin Tankard, pictured, Managing Director, Digital Pathways.

A recent report for the ninth Annual Cost of Cybercrime Study, found the value of risk for an average Times 1000 company, with 2019 revenues of £15 billion, equals 2.8 per cent of revenues per year and, even at this level, weaknesses remain. The cost of being hacked can run into many hundreds of thousands of pounds, coupled with the loss of business, market share and reputational damage.

The situation is not helped by the lack of cyber security talent. It is well-known that while the creativity and critical thinking of human cyber security expertise is key to gaining an advantage over cyber attackers, finding the skills is hard. The New York Times reported that the industry expects 3.5m cyber positions to be unfilled by the end of 2021. Even with the supposed hundreds of thousands of security experts available via bug bounty platforms across the world, the reality is that the pool of top talent is quite narrow.

An answer to this crisis is augmented intelligence (AI) or augmenting human security talent with artificial intelligence. New data from Synack, a trusted crowd-sourced security testing platform, revealed that organisations are successfully ramping up their ability to scale their security in 2020, to prevent data breaches. Already, they are covering more ground, getting 20 times more effective in their ability to cover their digital attack surface than traditional testing methods, by using AI alongside their cyber talented staff.

The Synack report identified three key areas that are having a significant impact on threat detections:

– Coverage and Scale: While humans are around two times more impactful at finding breach-worthy security vulnerabilities, an augmented combination of the best security talent and AI-enabled technology results in twenty times more effectiveness in their ability to cover their digital attack surface.

– Efficiency: Humans can accelerate their time to evaluate the breach-worthiness of a vulnerability by at least 73% by using AI-enabled technology.

– Effective Remediation: Companies can find and close critical…

Here are some tips, secrets of professional hackers

I probably sound like a broken record when I say to be careful of scammers who are pretending to be authorities.

Or to beware if an email or a phone call has information that seems too good to be true or has a sense of urgency to help someone in a serious bind.

Cyber Security

We all know there are scammers around the world whose full-time job is to “catch” people who will answer that email or tell the person on the phone some information to unlock access to their bank account. And the sad part is, there are still people every day who get caught by such scams, which are getting more sophisticated.

But there are a lot of less subtle scams and campaigns being perpetrated every day.
