Cyber-attack results in more than $800K stolen from Houston business, lawsuit filed

A lawsuit has been filed after online hackers used fake business emails to steal more than $800,000 from a Houston company.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Texas, authorities seized a total of $834,157 held in a Houston bank account.

RELATED: Home camera security flaw may have allowed hackers to watch for years

Online hackers reportedly controlled the account despite it looking like a legitimate company. In reality, officials said the unidentified hackers got access to an employee’s computer and accessed their company’s computer networks including email servers as well as accounts.

Through these phishing attacks, they were able to create fake email addresses but identified employees responsible for financial obligations and posed as vendors who were owed money.

That’s how, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the employees were “tricked” into wiring funds to an account, that the hackers controlled.

SUGGESTED: Artificial Intelligence making job scams more dangerous

This type of attack is described by investigators as a Business Email Compromise (BEC) scheme, which targets businesses involved in wire transfer payments.

“The fraud is carried out by compromising and/or ‘spoofing’ legitimate business email accounts through social engineering or computer intrusion techniques,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. “It causes employees of the victim company (or other individuals involved in legitimate business transactions with them) to transfer funds to accounts the scammers control.”

MORE CRIME AND PUBLIC SAFETY

The Secret Service conducted the investigation but is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Officials also shared some helpful tips to avoid being a victim of a BEC scheme which include:

  • Independently obtain mortgage payoff statements and confirm with verified and trusted sources.
  • Independently verify the authenticity of information included in correspondence and statements.
  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) on all email accounts.
  • Routinely change…

Norton Password Manager Hack Results in Huge Security Breach for Users!

1

Editorial Note – Parent company Gen Digital has reached out to us just to confirm that the issue is 100% entirely contained within Norton Password Manager and we would like to clarify, just in case of any ambiguity, that this article bears no reflection on Gen Digital’s other online security interests.

It is, of course, good security practice to have a complex password for your various online accounts. – With this in mind, however, the downside to this is that a good password is typically very difficult to remember. As such, password management software has become rather popular in recent years as effectively representing a one-stop secure depository for all your log-in information.

If you did, however, happen to use Norton Password Manager, then be warned! – Following a report via BleepingComputer, parent company Gen Digital has confirmed a huge security breach which has effectively seen every single user account, at least for a pretty period of time, potentially compromised!

And yes, I think this is what they call irony…

Norton Password Manager Users Warned Data Has Been Compromised!

According to the report, unknown person/s managed to obtain highly sensitive log-in information for Norton Password Manager via the Dark Web which, in basic terms, gave them ‘admin’ level access to the service. Through this, they could literally view and access any account, and yes, this includes the saved log-in information.

Now, admittedly, from an individual level, the chances that you have been affected by this breach are very slim. With that being said though, is this really a risk you would want to take? – Just when you thought this couldn’t get any more alarming, however, it would appear that this breach occurred over 6 weeks ago, and with it only just now being publically disclosed, that doesn’t exactly do much to help the reputation of Norton Password Manager nor its user base!

Put simply though, if you happen to use this product to manage your online security, expect an email at pretty much any moment detailing the breach. – For the interim, however, I would strongly advise you to access all the accounts you store on there and ensure you have,…

Ransomware attack delays SickKids lab results

A ransomware attack has delayed lab and imaging results at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children and could lead to longer wait times, the hospital said Thursday, noting that some of its systems could be offline for weeks.

The hospital said it was unable to provide details about the nature of the attack, calling it an “active and ongoing incident.”

There is no evidence to date that personal information had been affected, the hospital said.

“While we can confirm this is a ransomware attack, SickKids has been preparing for attacks of this nature, and mobilized quickly to mitigate potential impacts to the continuity of care,” the hospital said in a written statement Thursday.

SickKids reported Monday night that a “cybersecurity incident” prompted the hospital to call a Code Grey — the hospital code for system failure — on Sunday at 9:30 p.m.

In its first update since then, the hospital said it would likely be a “matter of weeks” before all systems are working as normal.

“Clinical teams are currently experiencing delays with retrieving lab and imaging results, which may cause longer wait times for patients and families,” the hospital said.

The ransomware attack comes as Canada’s largest pediatric hospital has had to cancel some surgeries and redeploy staff in recent weeks to deal with a surge of sick kids with respiratory infections.

Urgent and emergent care, as well as scheduled appointments and procedures, were expected to continue as it brought systems back online in the wake of the ransomware attack, the hospital said.

SickKids said the “fluid and evolving situation” was still under investigation.

Toronto police confirmed they were working with the hospital, the Ontario Provincial Police and the provincial government as part of the investigation.

Hackers in ransomware attacks use malware to encrypt a target’s information and hold it hostage until a ransom is paid.

Newfoundland and Labrador’s largest health authority, Eastern Health, said earlier this month that a ransomware attack…
