The release likely affects both students and staff, the district said.

“The sensitivity of this information is considered low. At this time, the school district has no evidence that critical information was disclosed.”

However, it warned that the information — while not necessarily sensitive — could be used for “targeted phishing attacks.”

Phishing is a common online fraud tactic where a bad actor tries to trick users into clicking on malicious links or divulging sensitive information such as passwords, credit card information or other personal information.

The district is warning students, families and staff to be extra vigilant if using their district email account for any emails asking for personal information or passwords.

Swansea Public Schools issues update regarding ransomware attack, return to school – Fall River Reporter

Superintendent John Robidoux has issued an update regarding a ransomware attack on #Swansea Public Schools’ network.

On Tuesday, January 3rd, Swansea Public Schools’ network experienced a ransomware attack. Within minutes of this attack, Swansea Public Schools’ cybersecurity company, Hub Technology, was able to isolate the attack and shut down the network system.

While the district worked to resolve the attack, all schools were closed on Wednesday, January 4th.

The cybersecurity company, in collaboration with the district’s IT Department, was able to remove any viruses, worms and ransomware on the network and add additional security measures.

Through a preliminary investigation, it was determined that no personal student or staff information was compromised and no cloud-based files or information was affected by the attack.

It is believed that this attack occurred due to an encrypted download that was run by someone within the district, but is not believed to be malicious. Swansea Public Schools will continue to participate in ongoing KnowBe4 training to assist school community members in learning more about security awareness and how to identify phishing attacks.

“I am thankful that our district has security measures attached to our network that prevented a much larger issue from occurring,” Superintendent Robidoux said. “I would like to thank Randi Arruda, Gilly Pereira and Gio Pimental for their hard work in ensuring that we are able to resolve this matter efficiently and proceed with teaching and learning in a safe manner.”

School will resume tomorrow, Thursday, January 5, for all students at their regular times.

Bristol Community College, Swansea School Ransomware Cyberattacks – NBC Boston

Ransomware attacks have hit a community college and a school district in Massachusetts’ Bristol County, interrupting classes as officials work to regain total control over their internet networks.

Ransomware attacks involve someone taking over a computer system or network and demanding payment, often in the form of cryptocurrency, to release it.

Online services, including email, at Bristol Community College have been affected for over a week. The cyberattack was discovered Dec. 23, though classes have continued.

“We would like to thank you for your patience and flexibility over the past week as we navigate the impact of what we now know to be a criminal cyberattack, which is an attempt by hackers to damage the college’s computer network,” the college said in a statement last week. “This has been a very difficult time for the college and we are grateful for your understanding. Winter classes are in session and we continue to move forward with our plans for the Spring semester.”

A message about the service disruption was still on the college’s website Wednesday.

Across the Taunton River in Swansea, school was closed for primary and secondary students Wednesday because the district’s internet network was being held ransom, its superintendent said.

The ransomware attack was being worked on Wednesday, after Swansea Public Schools Superintendent John Robidoux announced the closure Tuesday. He didn’t give a timeline on when schools would reopen.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the two ransomware attacks were connected. NBC10 Boston was reaching out to the FBI to see if they were assisting in either investigation.
