NASA gives solar ionic propulsion a monster boost

NASA this week took a giant step toward using solar electric power for future space missions by awarding a $ 67 million to Aerojet Rocketdyne to develop an advanced electric propulsion system.

Such a system would deploy large solar arrays that can be used to convert sunlight into electrical power that ionizes atoms of xenon which is the propellant for the spacecraft’s thrusters. The thrust of such a power plant isn’t huge but its ability to provide increasing, continuous power over a long period of time is what makes it so attractive for long-duration spaceflights.

Solar powered Blue Cell provides cellular backhaul without wires

As we mentioned in our earlier coverage of LINK, Bell Labs is expecting that the near future will bring a lot of growth in cellular devices, like smart appliances and sensors. Part of its solution to this flood of new devices is to give them their own chunk of the spectrum to keep them from getting in the way of user-driven devices, like phones and tablets. But that’s only part of the solution; phone and tablet traffic is going to climb as well.

The solution there is simply to create more cells so that there are fewer devices talking to a single base tower. But adding more access points isn’t a simple matter. Each point requires power and a network connection, and constructing large towers can be a headache of siting permits and contracts. To address these problems, a research effort at Bell Labs called “Blue Cell” is attempting to simplify cellular access points by getting rid of the wires.

As solar panel prices have plunged, getting rid of the power cord has gotten a lot easier. Of course, siting a large solar panel can be just as much trouble as siting a cell phone tower, so one of the major goals of the research was to reduce the energy requirements of a cellular access point. Examining the existing hardware, engineers found that the biggest energy draw was the digital signal processor, which converts the cellular signal into something that can be sent over network cables.

Solar panels built into smartphone screen to solve the battery-life crisis

At Mobile World Congress 2015 in Barcelona this week, Kyocera is showing a prototype that turns one of the modern smartphone’s biggest battery life liabilities into an asset – a smartphone that incorporates solar power technology into the touchscreen.

According to a Smithsonian Magazine report, Kyocera developed the technology in partnership with SunPartner Technologies and installed it on its Torque smartphone prototype, which was designed for rugged outdoor use.

At less than 0.5 millimeters in thickness and as much as 90% transparency, the screen technology could fit any of today’s popular smartphones without inhibiting their users, SunPartner Technologies said in a press release. The component that captures sunlight – called Wysips Crystal – can be installed just below the touchscreen panel of the smartphone, so it doesn’t affect the user experience, and feeds the solar energy into the battery.
