26% start holiday shopping before Halloween?

My mother, who passed away about 25 years ago, would have approved because she did it, but I simply cannot imagine starting my Christmas shopping already when I’m still short one Halloween costume for the kids.

Yet an article on Google’s “Think with Google” reports:

People are starting their research early, and retailers are stretching Black Friday promotions across November, changing the focus from just one day to a month-long event. More than half of consumers surveyed said they’ll start their research before Thanksgiving, with 26% of shoppers starting before Halloween.

Windows 10 beta now available to download—time to test the new Start menu

Microsoft released a technical preview of Windows 10 this morning, and it’s available for download here.

System requirements are a 1GHz or faster processor, 1GB of RAM for 32-bit systems or 2GB for 64-bit systems, 16GB of free hard disk space, and a Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with a WDDM driver. In other words, anything that’s capable of running Windows 8.1 can be moved to Windows 10. You can upgrade to the Windows 10 preview from either Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1.

It’s free, as long as you sign up for the Windows Insider Program with a Microsoft account. The 32-bit download is 3.16GB while the 64-bit one is 4.10GB. Although Microsoft makes a version of Windows for ARM devices, the preview is x86-only. The preview will expire on April 15, 2015, with Microsoft releasing the final version of the OS sometime after that.

New videos provide closer look at Windows 9 Start menu

After screenshots showing a first look at an early version of Windows 9 leaked yesterday, today we have a couple of videos from German site WinFuture.de.

Among other things, it’s possible to revert to the Start screen if you prefer it.

Both videos show the new Metro-esque Start menu. They demonstrate how the live tile portion works essentially identically to the Start screen today, with the same kinds of customization and organization options, and how the menu portion likewise works much like the Windows 7 Start menu.

Getting rid of all the live tiles.

The second video has some good news for inveterate live tile haters, showing that you can remove all the live tiles to leave the menu on its own.
