Hackers’ latest trick looks like free movie streaming

The recent FIFA World Cup brought out another round of bad actors capitalizing on the streaming demand of the popular games.

Instead of delivering a link to a legit way of watching, those who took the bait are sent to malicious sites that install malware on devices.

That’s the trouble with linking to what appear to be free streams and downloads of movies, video and music sources.

Blind linking can lead to more danger for your device than you may realize.

What is the risk of downloading movies illegally?

Criminals and hackers everywhere want to make it their mission to trick people into giving them their money, private information, or both. They do this with movies and popular online entertainment by providing downloadable links that look super convincing.  People who end up clicking them usually think that they’ll be able to consume what they want to watch at no cost.

HOW SCAMMERS ARE POSING AS YOUR CABLE AND INTERNET PROVIDERS

In reality, many of these links contain all kinds of malware that will give the hacker access to your information. And what’s worse, hackers are working overtime to figure out ways for these downloadable files to sneak past any kind of antivirus software that may stop them in their tracks.

What will happen to my device?

The change in your device may not happen immediately when you try downloading these pirated films. But eventually, you may notice your device becoming much slower, random apps opening and closing without your knowledge, and even your battery draining quickly.

For example, back in 2021, ReasonLabs found a new form of malware disguising itself as a way to watch the latest SpiderMan film for free online while it was still in theaters.  It was a malicious file containing cryptocurrency mining malware, which can steal your device’s resources and hunt for online currencies.

How to save money on Netflix and other streaming offers in France

A French app is making it possible for streaming service customers to save money on their subscriptions while still enjoying their favourite films and programmes.

Individual streaming platforms such as Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and Spotify do not cost a huge amount of money each month but if you subscribe to several, the charges can add up.

The Spliiit app is a platform which enables users to share subscriptions – both to streaming platforms and other services – and their cost each month.

Users create a free account via Spliiit.com, and can then search for streaming platforms and choose to join another person’s subscription and pay a portion of their monthly fee.

A Disney+ subscription might therefore cost €2.71 a month as opposed to €8.99.

However, Spliiit will add 5% commission, plus 35 cents in operational costs.

Other users come with a ‘trust score’ and response time rating attached, to help ensure that no one employs the service to defraud people.

You can also add your own subscriptions to the site so that other people can be added on, dividing the cost by two, three or more.

Spliiit claims that you can save up to €100 per year by sharing their subscriptions.

Other services available on Spliiit include YouTube Premium, Apple One, Canva, Dropbox, Calm, Headspace, Napster and computer security products like Mozilla VPN and Bitwarden.

ONLINE STREAMING- A Harmless Entertainment or a Cybersecurity Hazard

By Shigraf Aijaz, Cybersecurity Journalist and Writer, Be Encrypted

The popularity of online streaming has grown significantly in the past few years. In fact, by 2024, the global streaming market is estimated to be worth $688.7 billion. As per various trends, this popularity is not going anytime soon.

While the streaming industry does provide significant benefits to its users, cybercriminals have also started viewing it as a potential for exploits. Admittedly, this might sound alarming to many since online streaming and cybersecurity are two things that rarely go hand-in-hand for many.

In fact, for many, when it comes to online streaming, the only concern is acquiring a good movie or TV show. And although online streaming on free platforms is a known significant risk, many people shrug off these concerns while being paid subscriptions to popular streaming platforms such as Hulu, Netflix, or even Disney plus. However, the cyber threat landscape is a rapidly evolving platform of cyber criminal activity. The modern cybercriminals have managed to exploit even these innocent forms of entertainment for the netizens.

How is cyber security a concern with paid streaming platforms?

Entertainment platforms have long since been a lucrative method for cybercriminals to lure naive users. With millions of people taking up online streaming as their favorite pastimes, cybercriminals have been quick to plague this innocent source of entertainment with malicious deeds.

However, these activities were often only confined to free streaming platforms for a long time until TV networks started appearing as streaming platforms. The streaming industry is, therefore, now thriving with several platforms available for people ranging from Disney plus, Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Hulu. However, these appearances are not only good news for consumers. Cybercriminals have also been quick to seize the opportunity to exploit these platforms and perform criminal activities such as:

·       Malware

Since these streaming platforms do have dedicated secure sources for downloading, cybercriminals are unable to infect these apps with malware. However, that does not stop them from exploiting these platforms…
