FBI Takes Control of Hacker Group Suspected of Targeting NPS

(TNS) — The FBI has assumed control of operations run by a group of hackers that took credit for the ransomware attack of Norman Public Schools.

The group, known as Hive, has extorted more than $100 million from hospitals schools and other organizations, according to multiple reports.

Ransomware is a type of malicious software that threatens to publish or blocks access to data or a computer system, usually by encrypting it, until the victim pays a ransom fee to the attacker.

In November, a representative of the malware organization contacted several media outlets by email and wrote: “Our organisation [sic] has breached and downloaded from Norman Public Schools network most important information with a total size over 311 GB.”

Files downloaded, according to the email obtained by The Transcript, included contracts, nondisclosure agreements and other agreements; documents; private company information, including budgets, plans, evaluations, and school building floor and wire blueprints; employee information, including social security numbers, emails, addresses, phone numbers, photos, insurances information, payments; and student information, including social security numbers, emails, addresses, phone numbers, photos, insurance information, and payments.

Reached Friday, The FBI would not confirm Hive is the organization behind the NPS breach.

A school district spokesperson, however, said the district has been working in cooperation with the FBI to hold those involved accountable.

“We cooperated fully with the FBI during the investigation following the November 2022 malicious ransomware attack against Norman Public Schools,” Chelsey Kraft said in a statement. “From the beginning, we assumed we were part of a much larger ransomware scheme targeting many others because that is the way cyber criminals operate.”

NPS did not confirm whether Hive was behind the attack.

“The FBI has made no contact with us regarding this development and as a result, we have no updates,” Kraft said. “We applaud the FBI’s efforts to pursue these criminals and think groups like these should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

Yonkers invader takes top trot at Philly

CHESTER, PA – Yonkers invader Semi Tough (Somebeachsomewhere) continued sharp form on Christmas Eve Saturday afternoon at Harrah’s Philadelphia, winning the $22,500 fast-class handicap harness racing pace in an impressive 1:51.3 with the temperature at 13 degrees and a 3-second allowance given over the “fast” surface.

Semi Tough in prior win

Semi Tough tucked third as Stonebridge Karis forced Pat McGarry A to pace a :26.3 opening quarter before yielding. The pacesetter went on to the half in :56, then was asked for more speed with the backstretch tailwind, with Semi Tough coming out of third for driver Simon Allard to challenge before the three-quarters in 1:23.

Semi Tough made the lead towards the stretch, then held off the late bid of Blank Stare by three parts of a length.

A six-year-old gelding trained by Ron Burke for the ownership of Burke Racing Stable LLC and Weaver Bruscemi LLC, Frank Baldachino, and J&T Silva-Purnel & Libby, Semi Tough earned over $100,000 in the MGM Borgata Series early in the year, yet after a summer break has regained his form and has pushed his bankroll to $232,280 this year and $942,300 lifetime.

SEMI TOUGH REPLAY

Allard and Burke also teamed in the co-featured pace for males, a $15,300 race for upcoming horses: there the winner was the gelding Livinthebeachlife (Somebeachsomewhere) – Stienam’s Place), with $4.6 million worth of parentage. The four-year-old is two-for-two since coming from Ohio for Burke and owners Burke Racing Stable LLC and Weaver Bruscemi LLC, Chris Page, and Beasty LLC, gaining from out of the pocket to catch Southwind Sandor by 1½ lengths at the end of a 1:52.2 mile.

On the cold day the hot Burke/Allard combo just missed a sweep of the day’s features when in the $16,200 top pacing handicap for distaffs, Kat came up the inside from the pocket but just missed reaching the favored pacesetter Grace Rocks (Rockin Image) by a nose in 1:52.4. Grace Rocks is a mare who now has career earnings of $381,385; Jamal Williams trains the consistent miss for owner Howard Taylor.

Allard, thriving in the cold weather (a native of Quebec and thus from a climb further north than most of his rivals), added five more winners on…

UNSW takes top spot for number of new start-ups and spinouts

UNSW Sydney has ranked number one nationally for the greatest number of new start-up and spinout companies founded in 2021 through technology developed at UNSW. The latest Survey of Commercialisation Outcomes from Public Research (SCOPR) Summary Report revealed that UNSW supported 10 spinouts – 14 per cent of the 69 companies established across Australia. This figure is up from five companies in 2020, where UNSW placed an equal third. Of the 10 spinouts, six were founded by UNSW staff members.

The spinouts established in 2021 include:

New malware hack takes over your browser and search results

Another dangerous hack is taking over browsers via Microsoft’s PowerShell programming. The malware is called ChromeLoader, and it’s the latest “malvertising” scheme that uses online advertising to attack your device.

While you may be used to dealing with ads, these ones could be much more dangerous than leading you to purchase items you don’t need.

Read on to learn about this scary new hack and how you can protect yourself.

ChromeLoader malware hack

How ChromeLoader gets on your device

Hackers are using QR codes to trick users into downloading a pirated video game or movie, sometimes via Twitter. However, the QR code actually leads to ChromeLoader’s download site, which is how the harmful software gets downloaded without you realizing it.

While the known methods have been via movies, video games, and Twitter thus far, QR codes, in general, pose massive threats so always be sure you know what you’re scanning.

How to tell if you’ve been hacked by ChromeLoader

The quickest way you’ll know if this malware has been installed on your computer is if you start noticing unusual search results showing up. The point of “malvertising” is for advertisements to trick you into allowing malware on your device. ChromeLoader will redirect the windows you have open towards pages that look like search results or advertisements that you wouldn’t have opened. Be sure to not click any of these fake ads or search results.

How to protect your device from ChromeLoader

Be sure to never try and watch movies, shows, or play games on websites you don’t recognize. If you’re being advertised a movie or expensive video game for free, there’s a higher chance you’ll be scammed instead of getting to see the latest hit out of Hollywood.

Always keep your operating systems and devices up to date. Updating your software makes it harder for hackers to get through.

But the only way to protect against malware including ChomeLoader is to install antivirus software. ChromeLoader has been researched for the past few months by cyberattack security companies so most antivirus programs are up to date on protecting against it.

As discussed in our Best Antivirus Security Software and Apps…
