Chinese spies accused of using Huawei products in secret Australia telecom hack

Now a Bloomberg News investigation has found a key piece of evidence underpinning the U.S. efforts — a previously unreported breach that occurred halfway around the world nearly a decade ago.

In 2012, Australian intelligence officials informed their U.S. counterparts that they had detected a sophisticated intrusion into the country’s telecommunications systems. It began, they said, with a software update from Huawei that was loaded with malicious code.

The breach and subsequent intelligence sharing was confirmed by nearly two dozen former national security officials who received briefings about the matter from Australian and U.S. agencies from 2012 to 2019. The incident substantiated suspicions in both countries that China used Huawei equipment as a conduit for espionage, and it has remained a core part of a case they’ve built against the Chinese company, even as the breach’s existence has never been made public, the former officials said.

The episode helps clarify previously opaque security concerns driving a battle over who will build 5G networks, which promise to bring faster internet connectivity to billions of people around the globe. Shenzhen-based Huawei dominates the more than $90 billion global telecommunications equipment market, where it competes against Sweden’s Ericsson AB and Finland’s Nokia Oyj.  But the U.S., Australia, Sweden and the U.K. have all banned Huawei from their 5G networks, and about 60 countries signed on to a U.S. Department of State program where they’ve committed to avoiding Chinese equipment for their telecommunications systems. Such efforts, which have also included U.S. sanctions against the Chinese company, have slowed Huawei’s growth and heightened tensions with China.

The briefings described to Bloomberg contained varying degrees of detail, and the former officials who received them had different levels of knowledge of — and willingness to discuss — specifics. Seven of them agreed to provide detailed accounts of the evidence uncovered by Australian authorities and included in their briefings.

At the core of the case, those officials said, was a software…

Russia’s MTS mobile operator posts profit rise, ups guidance, Telecom News, ET Telecom

Russia's MTS mobile operator posts profit rise, ups guidanceMOSCOW: Russia’s biggest mobile operator MTS on Thursday reported a 46.5% net profit jump to 17.2 billion roubles ($232.06 million) in the second quarter and raised its full-year revenue guidance to high single-digit growth.

MTS is one of several Russian companies developing services beyond its core business. President and CEO Vyacheslav Nikolaev said non-core segments – fintech, retail, media, cloud and digital – contributed more than half of revenue growth year-on-year.

“MTS Bank in particular has now achieved sufficient scale to become an engine of profitability for the group as a whole,” Nikolaev said in a statement.

The bank added around 100,000 customers in the quarter and posted net profit of 3.4 billion roubles for the first half of 2021, versus a 0.9 billion rouble loss in the same period last year, MTS said.

Second-quarter revenue was up 10.6% to 128.6 billion roubles. The company said it expects adjusted operating income before depreciation and amortisation (OIBDA) to rise by at least 5% this year, up from a previous forecast of 4% growth.

Adjusted OIBDA was 10.2% higher at 57.2 billion roubles in the second quarter.

MTS confirmed its 2021 capex guidance of between 100-110 billion roubles. It said Russian legal requirements that telecom operators store certain data for up to six months meant it would need to spend around 50 billion roubles on data storage systems between H2 2018 and H1 2023.

Increasing Demand of Telecom IoT Market by 2027

”
Telecom Internet of Things market is considered as the fastest growing market and it provide enhanced connectivity solutions to numerous smart devices. Technology plays an important role in the development of Telecom Internet of Things market and especially with the innovation of Internet of Things. Internet of Things comes with the concept that everything around should be electronically integrated and interconnected. Telecom operators are now using digital platforms that combine connectivity, analysis, mobile, security and cloud to support business and all these empowers great revenue opportunity for them.
The growing adoption of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) is expected to be one of the major factors that will have a positive impact on the growth of this market in the coming years. In addition to enabling operators to gather, analyze, and distribute networked resources, ITS also helps reduce the impact of traffic congestion by providing greater visibility and improving communication among passengers. Investments towards the development of such smart solutions will bolster the growth prospects of the telecom IoT market. For instance, one of the leading automotive manufacturers General Motors has recently supported the ride-sharing service provider Lyft by making an investment of about USD 500 million towards the development of IoT projects that help provide efficient public commuting services.

Global 5G roaming subscribers to reach 210 million in 2026, up 4,500% during 2021-26: StudyNEW DELHI: The number of global roaming subscribers using 5G services will reach increase from 4.5 million in 2021 to 210 million in 2026, growing by over 4,500%, as operators accelerate fifth-generation network rollouts and the international travel industry recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a study by Juniper Research.

The findings recommend that operators must now focus on increasing 5G roaming support in order to support the future rise in demand for data when roaming over 5G networks.

“As demand for international travel returns, operators must adjust to the significant uptake of 5G subscriptions during the pandemic. A failure to provide 5G roaming capabilities in key travel destinations will diminish brand reputation amongst subscribers and lead to churn to competitors,” Research author Scarlett Woodford noted.

Additionally, operators should also develop features such as roaming analytics, sponsored roaming, and steering of roaming.

With the proliferation of 5G roaming, vendor competition around the abovementioned 5G-enabled services will also intensify.

The findings underlined that vendors must also address subscribers’ demand for bandwidth and latency when roaming over 5G to home network connectivity, by offering value-added services.

It also projects the global roaming data traffic from 5G subscribers to reach 770 petabytes (PB) by 2026, from 2.6PB in 2021, representing enough data to stream 115 million hours of 4K video from platforms like Netflix.

The findings observed that the projected rise in data will necessitate 5G roaming data contracts between operators to provide roaming subscribers with comparable user experiences whilst roaming.
