Opinions about RFID have long been controversial, but no more so than when a Texas school tried to suspend a girl for refusing to wear a student ID card embedded with an RFID chip. By forcing students to hang the ID card around their necks and to keep it visible at all times, the school claims it is guaranteed proof of class attendance or absence.

A federal judge convicted a 30-year-old former college student of trying to help support Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) on Nov. 14.

After acting as his own attorney in a four-day trial at a federal courthouse in southern Texas, Barry Bujol Jr., a resident of Hempstead, Texas, and former student at Prairie View A&M University, was convicted of providing material support to AQAP.  He now faces a maximum of 15 years in federal prison for on a terrorism charge and an additional five years for an aggravated identity theft conviction and a $250,000 fine.

Colonel Rick Noriega, a former Texas state legislator and Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in 2008, was promoted to the brigade commander in the Texas Army National Guard of the 71st Theater Information Operations Group. 

Col. Noriega will continue to serve as national president and CEO of Avance, Inc., a community-based organization that offers early childhood education, and parenting and comprehensive family services to predominantly Hispanic families, said a statement from his wife Melissa Noriega.

Hughes awarded Texas satellite broadband Internet services contract

Hughes Network Systems, LLC, a supplier of broadband satellite solutions and services, and a provider of managed network and application services, announced on June 27 that it has been awarded a contract by the State of Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR) to provide primary business Internet and access continuity services.

The multiple award contract comes under the Texas Agency Network Next Generation (Tex-AN NG) Communications Technology Services program, and is for a period of five years.
