TTC says investigation underway amid ransomware attack – Toronto

The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) says an investigation is underway amid a ransomware attack that has impacted some services and systems.

The TTC said in a statement that staff learned the transit agency was the victim of a ransomware attack on Friday.

The statement said IT staff first detected “unusual network activity” Thursday night and began investigating.

“Impact was minimal until midday today (Friday) when hackers broadened their strike on network servers,” the statement said.

Due to the attack, online Wheel-Trans bookings are unavailable, as is next vehicle information on platform screens, apps and on the TTC website.

The TTC said its internal email service is offline and the agency’s “Vision system,” which is used to communicate with vehicle operators, is also not available. Operators are still able to communicate with transit control by radio, however.

The TTC said it has also cancelled a Saturday subway closure on Line 1 between St. Clair and College stations which was going to be used to complete track work.

“This incident did not cause significant service disruptions and there is no risk to employee or customer safety,” the statement said.

“The full extent of the attack is being looked into and the TTC is working with law enforcement and cybersecurity experts on this matter. The City of Toronto’s IT Services department has also been consulted.”

Hacking attack on website as Bulgaria’s 2021 census gets underway

A hacking attack disrupted the website of Bulgaria’s 2021 census as the online phase of the process began on September 7, the National Statistical Institute said.

“We expect such attacks and we have taken action. This attack is a good test of the security system we have built. Most likely, such attacks are not even malicious, but an opportunity for someone to show off their ability to fight such systems,” the National Statistical Institute said.

From September 7 until midnight on September 17, residents of Bulgaria may participate in the census by filling in an online form.

The second stage is from September 18 to October 3, when enumerators will visit households, between 8am and 8pm.

A warning has been issued that enumerators will not visit homes between September 7 and 17, and anyone claiming to be one during this time is likely a fraudster.

Failure to participate in the census means a fine of 160 leva (about 80 euro).

The deputy head of the National Statistical Institute, Diana Yancheva, said that everyone in Bulgaria who usually resides in the country must participate in the census. “We do not care whether they are Bulgarian or foreign citizens, they will have to be counted,” she said.

Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Pekanov called on the public to participate in the census online, as this was easier and safer given the Covid-19 pandemic.

Enumerators are obliged to visit every household, even those who have participated online. However, such visits may be avoided by posting on your door the unique 15-digit code that the system will generate when the electronic form is filled in correctly.

You should have your Bulgarian identity documents to hand when you prepare to participate online. To register, you must have a valid e-mail address, and provide your personal identity number, and the number and date of issue of your identity document.

You will receive a verification link at the e-mail address, which – as often happens in such cases – can go directly to the spam folder, so if you do…

Homeland Security (CISA) Confirms Attacks Underway

Homeland Security cybersecurity agency says update Google Chrome as attackers home in on new security flaws.

Within the space of just three short weeks, Google has patched no less than five potentially dangerous vulnerabilities in the Chrome web browser.

These are not your common vulnerabilities either, but rather ones known as zero-days. A zero-day being a vulnerability that is being actively exploited by attackers while remaining unknown to the vendor or threat intelligence outfits.

Once the vendor becomes aware of the security flaw, day zero, it can start to mitigate against exploitation but not before. The attackers, therefore, have a head start.

What do we know about these zero-day Chrome flaws?

The latest two zero-days to be discovered are classed as high-severity in nature and affect Chrome for Windows, Mac and Linux.

The precise details of CVE-2020-16013 and CVE-2020-16017 have not yet been made public as Google restricts access to such information until the majority of users have updated.

However, the Department of Homeland Security cybersecurity agency, CISA, has advised that an attacker “could exploit one of these vulnerabilities to take control of an affected system.”

I can confirm that CVE-2020-16013 relates to the V8 JavaScript engine for Chrome and involves an incorrectly handled security check. Exploitation would most likely require an attacker to direct the victim to a malicious web page.

CVE-2020-16017, on the other hand, would appear to be a memory corruption vulnerability within the Chrome website sandboxing feature known as Site Isolation.

CISA urges users to update Google Chrome in light of ongoing attacks

The bad news is that attackers already know precisely what the vulnerabilities are and how to exploit them. CISA has confirmed that the security vulnerabilities have been “detected in exploits in the wild.”

Unsurprisingly, CISA is encouraging users to apply the necessary
