Senator to file bill requiring border agents to get a warrant before searching phones

In moments of optimism, I’d like to believe there is still some common ground upon which liberals and conservatives – even supporters of President Trump – can stand with firm resolve. One such patch should be ensuring privacy protections for the digital devices and sensitive personal information of all U.S. citizens when they pass through border checkpoints.

Toward that end, U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., has signaled his intention to file legislation that would require customs and law enforcement agencies to acquire a warrant before compelling access to a U.S. traveler’s electronic device and also prohibit the growing practice of demanding social media identities and passwords. In a letter to John Kelly, director of homeland security, Wyden poses the following questions:

FBI doesn’t have a warrant to review new emails linked to Clinton investigation

After seeing reports that the Justice Department is “furious” at FBI Director Comey for telling Congress about new emails potentially related to Hillary Clinton’s private email server and if she disclosed classified information, the Clinton campaign “made it personal” and accused Comey of a smear campaign. Comey, ironically the same FBI guy who recommended no criminal charges for Clinton, is now being treated like her enemy.

“It is pretty strange to put something like that out with such little information right before an election,” Clinton said during a rally at Daytona Beach on Saturday. “In fact, it’s not just strange; it’s unprecedented and deeply troubling.” She added, “So we’ve called on Directory Comey to explain everything right away, put it all out on the table.”

Reddit’s removal of ‘warrant canary’ could hint at US demand for its user data

Reddit has removed a notice, known as a warrant canary, from its transparency report for 2015, suggesting that it may have received a secret national security order for user data.

The removal of the warrant canary is a reminder to users that their online communications could be the target of investigators.

The most controversial of the orders is the National Security Letter, which gives the government the authority to compel the production of customer records held by telephone companies, Internet service providers and other electronic communications service providers.

Companies, who have been asked for user data by the government, are usually served the requests under a “gag order” that prohibits them from disclosing the request for data.
