What is the best Internet Security program for me?

I know that people have different opinions but the following is what I like in an internet security program:

1. To have a nice interface. I don’t like to look old like if it was taken from DOS.

2. It gives you a good security. I tried Norton 2006 but I found that it is a piece of rubbish. I even discovered that my laptop had viruses and Norton kept telling me “No viruses found!”

3. I don’t want it to slow down my laptop. Because I also tried McAfee, which is fine, but it killed my laptop and made very slow especially at windows start ups.

4. It shouldn’t be very annoying. Like Kaspersky for example, which it takes your permission to allow any software on your pc to connect to the internet even internet explorer. And it keeps asking you every time you run any software.

I think that I tried the most popular internet security programs but still couldn’t find the best. Please help me find the best internet security program…

Thanks in advance

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.

    AVG Removes I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF

Spybot – Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven’t intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been “hijacked” (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don’t see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there’s no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

I don’t know what is the best for your pc. However below is a site with recommendations on how to secure your pc.

The Internet is not a safe place if you go online without securing your computer. The information here may seem like a lot to absorb, especially for novice computer users, yet if you are patient and take each item one at a time you will soon realize how uncomplicated this really is. Following these protection guidelines is an absolute must in today’s online world.

After applying everything listed here you are lowering your vulnerability to almost zero; however nothing will ever protect you 100%, and don’t ever believe anyone who claims otherwise.

I also recommend AVD Free 7.8 from Grisoft. It is free forever, not a trial. I have heard from several colleagues that it works better than McAfee and Symantec put together. I use it and swear by it. Updates are done automatically when you login to your system. You can’t go wrong. To get a copy, go to free.grisoft.com

My favourite so far is Avast for anti-virus, so far my experience with it has been very good, it also comes with an on-access scanner that scans just about everything you do and warns you when you’re touching anything harmful. It even warned me once before I even downloaded something, it was in a archive as well which surprised me that it was able to tell. Best of all, it’s completely free.

Firewall on the other hand, I just use the standard windows firewall and my router pretty much takes care of most of the attacks with it’s built in firewall and protection.

For spyware I use Spybot: Search and Destroy.

Basically Internet Security is made up of 3 things:
    AntiVirus
    Firewall
    Spyware Protection

Some people give you an all in one package but it doesnt mean its better. I feel go with the best in each!

AntiVirus – Nod32 and would not think of anything else.

Firewall – Think if you need one? If ur behind a home dsl/cable router (with DMZ off) then windows firewall (as good as nothing) is suitable, otherwise try stuff like zonealarm. If you are directly connected to the net then the firewall is really needed (e.g. dialup).

Spyware- Spyware Doctor is the best!!! If u want a free software (only if you want a free) then try ad-aware from (Lavasoft USA).

Hope this helps and all the Best.

not sure why you had problems with nortons as its one of the best out there for protection.
    anyway
zonealarm is a great option for a all in one
it does have a free firewall

the pro or security suite has anti-virus,spyware as well as the firewall (depending on which you choose)

I suggest you download AOL Active Virus Shield, It’s based on the popular Kaspersky Lab Virus Killer.

There’s links and also a great walkthrough with a step by step guide: http://walkthroughwizard.info/

Why not “roll ya own” security suite for free?

    1. For your Anti-Virus…………………….

Personally, I use the AOL AntiVirusShield. Don’t let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
    http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82

AOL AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

    2. For your Firewall………………….

An excellent free firewall is Comodo Personal Firewall. It can pass firewall “leak tests” that even a lot of the “paid-for” firewalls cannot pass.

And Comodo has a great support forum. Where the CEO / President of the company might even himself answer your question! Check it out at:
    http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

    3. For your Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware needs……………

Pick and choose at least 2 anti-spywares from the list below and alternate scanning with them on a regular basis. New spywares are created literally hourly, so no single anti-spyware can really detect all malware. Have at least 2 on hand and alternate scanning with each every few days or so. All are free. All can remove as well as detect.

    Spybot Search and Destroy:

    Windows Defender:

Unfortunately, many “paid for” anti-spyware products are in fact either of limited usefulness or downright scams. When in doubt, look at the list of rogue anti-spyware solutions listed here:
    http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

    4. And to protect your computer from ever getting infected with spyware in the first place……………….

    SpywareBlaster:
    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

    SiteAdvisor:

    Everything here is 100% free!!!!!!

    Great luck!
