INDIAN HEAD, Md. – The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) is joining in the day-long festivities to celebrate the 101st anniversary of the Town of Indian Head Sept. 25 by hosting the “Art of Innovation” at the CSM Velocity Center. The public is invited to visit the Velocity Center throughout the day to enjoy an art exhibit, musical improvisation, games of giant Jenga, face painting and see presentations highlighting innovative technologies including robotics, 3-D printing and prototypes. Visitors will also have the chance to learn about the accomplishments of the Talons, CSM’s nationally ranked robotics team, and meet members of CSM’s Society of Women Engineers and National Society of Black Engineers.


“We couldn’t be more excited to spend the day in Indian Head to commemorate the town’s historic milestone and host a day of fun and community fellowship,” said CSM Associate Vice President of Continuing Education and Workforce Development Ellen Flowers-Fields. “We are very proud of the Velocity Center and the role that our community college plays in support of the Navy and in the economic revival of the Town of Indian Head. We are eager to show it off and meet our neighbors and visitors face-to-face.”


The CSM Velocity Center – where education and innovation meet – opened its doors one year ago during a Sept. 17, 2020 socially distant ribbon-cutting ceremony before about 1,300 Facebook Live onlookers.  At the time, the Naval Surface Warfare Center Indian Head Division was marking its 130th anniversary and the Town of Indian Head was marking its 100th anniversary, but the Navy and the town were unable to celebrate their milestones in grand fashion due to pandemic restrictions.


The Town of Indian Head’s Sept. 25 activities to celebrate its 1920 incorporation and commemorate its centennial anniversary – plus one year – include a parade, amusement rides, live entertainment and a firework show in around the Village Green Park & Pavilion and the Indian Head Senior Center. The town’s events start at 9 a.m. and end after dark.

The Great Game on the Anniversary of the End of Bretton Woods

August 15 is the 50th anniversary of the end of Bretton Woods, when the US unilaterally ended the last formal linkages between the dollar and gold.  Nixon ushered in the modern era, even if he did not intend to do so.  The only thing that seemed pertinent at the time was that the US did not want to part with any more of its gold, and Nixon feared a recession that would undermine his chances for getting re-elected in 1972. The main demand for US gold was not coming from the Soviet Union or Communist China but from America’s capitalist rivals and allies, primarily in Europe.  

The period after the dollar devalued against gold (and other major currencies) might have been dubbed the first G-zero era.  The US foreign policy in Vietnam undermined its international prestige. Germany’s “ostpolitik” reflected a growing divergence between the US and Europe.  Servan-Schreiber’s international bestseller, “The American Challenge” (1968), accused US multinational companies of colonizing Europe.

However, it proved to be an interregnum. Then, less than a decade after Nixon’s decision, a new era opened, characterized in many respects by turning Bretton Woods on its head.  Currencies floated against the dollar.  Capital was liberated, purposely freed from restrictions on its mobility in several dimensions.  Resistance to new forms of protections, such as Voluntary Export Restrictions and Orderly Market Agreements, ultimately necessitated replacing the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (GATT) with the World Trade Organization.  

The US trade balance, and more broadly, the current account balance, was deteriorating years before the capital markets were opened.  This means that historically at least, the export of foreign savings to the US did not cause the external imbalances, even if later America’s capital account surplus contributed to the yawning of the goods deficit.  The capital offensive associated with Reagan-Thatcher came to an end.  It may have ended with the tech bubble in 2001, but we would be inclined to mark the end with the Great Financial Crisis.

Coalition Against Stalkerware’s One Year Anniversary Recognizes Milestones, New Members and Celebrates UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women | Coronavirus

Today, the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women also coincides closely with the Coalition Against Stalkerware’s one year anniversary. In its first year, the Coalition has more than doubled its membership, expanding both in geography and expertise in its partners including domestic violence advocacy and direct service organizations, IT security vendors, mobile security companies, privacy solutions providers, an association of technology journalists, and organizations focused on cyber safety.

For some years, the problem of stalkerware has been on the rise. Non-profit organizations are experiencing a growing number of survivors seeking help with the problem, and cybersecurity companies are detecting a consistent increase in these harmful applications. Launched in November 2019, the Coalition Against Stalkerware became an important organization dedicated to protecting consumers from abuse, stalking and harassment via commercially-available surveillance software.

Stalkerware programs enable an abuser to intrude into a person’s private life and can be used as a tool for abuse in cases of domestic violence and stalking. By installing these applications on a person’s device, abusers can get access to their victim’s messages, photos, social media, geolocation, audio or camera recordings (in some cases, this can be done in real-time). Such programs run hidden in the background, without a victim’s knowledge or consent.

Data from member organizations has shown a sharp rise in stalkerware apps in recent years.

  • In 2019, Kaspersky detected a 67% year-on-year increase of stalkerware usage on its users’ mobile devices at a global level. The number of stalkerware installations worldwide during the first 10 months of 2020 (from January to October) totaled more than 48,500, which is close to the total (almost 52,000 installations) observed over the same period in 2019.
  • According to Malwarebytes, while these apps have always presented a significant threat to users, the shelter-in-place orders that began taking effect in March 2020 resulted in a dramatic uptick in usage….
