Teen “Hackers” on Discord Selling Malware for Quick Cash

Cybersecurity researchers urge parents to keep track of their children’s online activities.

Avast security researchers have discovered a server on Discord where a group of minors is involved in developing, upgrading, marketing, and selling malware and ransomware strains on the platform, supposedly to earn pocket money.

The researchers believe all of them are minors since they repeatedly mentioned their parents and teachers and casually used age-specific insults. Researchers learned about their activities through their discussion on Discord.

Minors Promoting Easy-to-Use Malware

The hackers are involved in selling malware strains of Snatch, Lunar, and Rift and offer all kinds of services from info-stealers to ransomware and cryptominers. However, researchers noted that teen hackers mainly provide easy-to-use malware builders and toolkits, which help users employ the “Do it yourself” (DIY) approach to use them without actual programming. All they need to do is customization of appearance and functions.

How does the Group operate?

Interested parties must pay a fee to become a group member or use the malware-as-a-service feature. The registration fee ranges between €5 and €25. In their report, Avast researchers noted that around 100 accounts have already subscribed to access a hacking group.

The malware distribution process is a little unconventional. The hackers create a YouTube video demonstrating a fake crack for a popular computer game or commercial software, including a download link in the description.

To develop a sense of authenticity, other members of the Discord group post comments on the video and thank the author while confirming that the link actually worked. This strategy is much more twisted than bots for adding comments since it becomes impossible to identify fraud when a video receives comments from genuine users.

How to Deal with Teen Hackers?

It is a fact that this scenario is concerning. Therefore, hacking talent among teens and minors must be diverted towards positive, ethical purposes for the overall betterment of the cybersecurity industry.

Parents must talk to their…

Many new malicious Android apps crop up, delete them now before they steal your data and cash

If you’ve downloaded an interesting-looking Android app from Google Play anytime in the last few weeks that for one reason or another felt… kind of sketchy, you might want to check out our latest list of malicious titles caught red-handed by various security researchers employing different data and money-stealing tricks.

While most of these have been promptly kicked out of the official Play Store, at least three apps are still available for new installations at the time of writing, including one that’s racked up over 50,000 downloads around the world, and perhaps more worryingly, a 4.8-star user rating average based on 900+ reviews.

The bulk of those reviews are most likely fabricated, mind you, with a number of others correctly identifying the app as a “fraud” or “total fake”, highlighting one of the easiest ways to avoid these types of dangers. But before elaborating on that, let’s break down the list promised above in two smaller lists.

Here are the newest malicious Android apps you need to get rid of

  • Document Manager
  • Coin track Loan – Online loan
  • Cool Caller Screen
  • PSD Auth Protector
  • RGB Emoji Keyboard
  • Camera Translator Pro

And these are some slightly older apps also discovered carrying malware

  • Fast PDF Scanner
  • Air Balloon Wallpaper
  • Colorful Messenger
  • Thug Photo Editor
  • Anime Wallpaper
  • Peace SMS
  • Happy Photo Collage
  • Original Messenger
  • Pellet Messages
  • Smart Keyboard
  • Special Photo Editor
  • 4K Wallpapers
Unless you’re extremely adventurous (read reckless) and you like to be among the first few people in the world to try out shady apps with features that are in no way special or unique, the chances of you finding any of these titles installed on your phones are microscopic.

Unfortunately, we can’t say the same about the first group, which includes at least three apps that managed to break into the five-digit Google Play download territory at one point or another. In theory, that puts tens of thousands if not more than 100,000 Android users in danger of having money, passwords, and other types of personal information stolen without mercy.

Their tricks are taken straight from “popular” Joker and Hydra playbooks, in case you’re wondering, collecting…

Help us break down the significance of this Crypto.com hack that took place and the significance that it places, once again, around security within the space too.

VICTOR FANG: Absolutely. Thanks for having me here. So, yeah, Crypto.com got hacked, right, and then $15 million being sent to Tornado Cash and other mixers a few days ago. And, I mean, we’ve been following these incident and I think it’s probably related to the two-factor authentication hack. It is not on the blockchain. I want to highlight is not on the blockchain or smart currency or anything like that, but it’s actually on the internet cybersecurity of the countermeasure that that company probably have done poorly. And this is actually all related to this emerging sector in cybersecurity called the Web3 Security. And Web3 Security is all around protecting crypto, smart contract, your NFTs, and all blockchain digital assets.

DAVID HOLLERITH: Yeah, so, Victor, can you try to explain–

VICTOR FANG: Yeah, and–

DAVID HOLLERITH: Can you explain what a mixing service is just to give our audience a little more context?

VICTOR FANG: Absolutely. So, so far, there are three different kinds of major mixing services, right? So I link the layer one, for example, Monero, Zcash, and another one is…
