City of Refuge offering training that is changing people’s lives – WSB-TV Channel 2

ATLANTA — The US Federal Reserve says Black and brown families earn about half of what white families earn. But there’s a local program that’s designed to change that.

The non-profit City of Refuge is looking for people who are interested in computers to come and take a coding class or a cyber-security class for free. When you’re done, you could get a job paying as much as $85,000 a year.

“I was actually the security guard at the front gate here,” Nicholas Jordan said.

Jordan was a security guard with no college education, but he heard about City of Refuge and its cyber security class.

He graduated in May, has a full-time job and his life is forever changed.

“I’ve doubled my income and I’m in a much more stable place. The things that I’m learning, I’m engaged mentally all the time,” Jordan said.

Harvard University said Black families make one-tenth the income that white families take home.

City of Refuge is trying to change that by offering computer coding and cybersecurity classes for free.

“Our lowest paying jobs have been in the low 50′s and the highest has been 80, a lot of 65, 75′s in there, full benefit’s, full pay package,” City of Refuge employment specialist Ron Cofiled told Channel 2′s Dave Huddleston.

The department of labor has given City of Refuge a $2.5 million grant to train 280 under-employed or unemployed people. So far, 74 students have graduated. Some 35 people like Sharaima Colson are currently enrolled in the 9-month program.

“It’s absolutely amazing,” Colson said.

She said if you want a better life there are opportunities out there.

“I feel very excited about the fact that, me being a middle-aged woman, and I’m able to go out pursue something new and encourage other women, and say, ‘Hey, you can do this too,’” Colson said.

City of Refuge is ready to sign up the next class. In fact, the grant is funded through 2025.

If you would like to enroll, City of Refuge said the next Cyber & Coding Class starts in mid-February 2023. There is an open house every Monday at 1 p.m. at City of Refuge, located at 1300 Joseph E. Boone Boulevard in their workforce hub.

Back 2 School: Wednesday will be the busiest day of the week when 15 districts return – WSB-TV Channel 2

Students will have to use clear bags when returning to school in Clayton County this year The district said the change comes after more than 100 guns were found on county campuses last year.

ATLANTA — Wednesday will be the busiest day of the back to school rush in north Georgia.

There are a total of 15 school districts in the Channel 2 viewing area that will return to class: Banks, Bartow, Bremen, Buford, Butts, Clarke, Clayton, Douglas, Griffin-Spalding, Gwinnett, Heard, Henry, Marietta City, Putnam and Oconee schools.

Join Fred Blankenship, Lori Wilson, Brian Monahan and Mike Shields for all your Back 2 School needs! Watch Channel 2 Action News This Morning from 4:30 a.m. to 7 a.m.

Banks County

Banks County announced some changes for the school year. A new portal system for students and parents called Infinite Campus will be used. The system will provide families with grades, assignments, attendance and announcements.

Banks County Schools also announced more SRO officers will be stationed at every school with the focus on safety. A final change includes a new bell schedule for Banks High School.

Bartow County

In Bartow County, students in all grades are eligible for free school supplies. The district approved using federal relief funds to cover items like Lysol wipes, loose-leaf paper, crayons, pencils, notebooks and binders.

Bartow County Schools are also launching a 10-month mental health campaign “Everybody has a Story and Somebody Cares”. The district also created a 25-member Student Mental Health subcommittee made up of principals, parents, counselors and community leaders.

Clayton County

The biggest change in Clayton County will be the district’s new backpack policy. School officials approved a clear backpack policy for the 2022-23 school year.

“We will provide clear bookbags to all of our students to help them carry their books. Hopefully this will provide schools an easier way to access whether or not students have inappropriate items in their bookbags,” Clayton County Schools Superintendent Dr. Morcease Beasley said.

Beasley said clear backpacks are to keep students and staff safe, but they also have safety plans at every school.

BlackBerry offers Kaspersky replacement cybersecurity for the channel

The Russian invasion in Ukraine has demonstrated that while wars in the past were mainly confined to geographical locations, today’s battles are also being fought digitally, and globally. The challenge of ‘borderless’ cyber warfare is further underlined by this week‘s joint warning from Five Eyes Alliance security authorities, including the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) and New Zealand’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), urging Managed Service Providers to protect the IT supply chain with a fresh set of cybersecurity measures.

The Biden Administration also just revealed the USA will ramp up a security probe into Kaspersky, following earlier statements by Germany and Italy about potential cyber risks associated with the company’s software.

BlackBerry previously reported that MSPs are a viable target, particularly for ransomware attacks, due to their level of access to multiple customer networks and sensitive data. BlackBerry’s 2022 Threat Report also revealed that malicious hacking attempts occur every 39 seconds, with SMEs facing upward of 11 cyberthreats per device per day.

“The message from cyber security experts is clear: the cyber threat must be taken seriously, and caution is advised when dealing with companies based in a country whose government may be hostile,”  BlackBerry says.

Proactive, not reactive

According to BlackBerry, many customers and companies in the Australian and New Zealand channel ecosystem are now asking themselves whether their antivirus solutions are keeping them safe in the long term.

Regardless of the AV vendor, one thing should be clear: signature-based, reactive cybersecurity solutions and antivirus programs are no longer sufficient for comprehensive system protection. Today’s threat environment requires a proactive approach and innovative solutions based on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to detect and prevent cyberattacks.

“BlackBerry commends the new Five Eyes cybersecurity measures to help MSPs proactively defend the IT supply chain,” says

Graeme Pyper, director of APAC channels at BlackBerry.

“With widespread IT security skills gaps, and the looming threat to privileged…

Navigating risks in a 5G enabled IoT Channel

By IC Bala Prasad Peddigari, IEEE Senior Member, Growth and Transformation Innovation Leader, TCS

The high-speed communication that comes with 5G has undoubtedly opened a host of opportunities for the future of tech. According to a recent Ericsson Mobility Report, massive IoT will contribute to 51% of cellular IoT connections and 5G subscriptions are expected to reach 4.4 billion by 2027. These findings promise to deliver reliable and secure high data rates. However, each device that is connected in the 5G enabled IoT ecosystem, opens a surface for the channels that allow the sensing, collecting, and processing vast amount of information at high speed. This process accumulates a huge amount of data that is highly prone to many security challenges because of the interconnectivity between the billions of devices participating in the IoT landscape – and inevitably making them vulnerable to attacks.

Furthermore, the integration of edge cloud in the context of 5G enabled IoT has opened many new use-cases, where multiple tenants can leverage the local compute power of edge devices, edge gateway and edge data centers. This triggers many data security threats, and it requires taking measures to protect attack surfaces from advanced persistent threats, web application vulnerabilities, API security, and lateral propagation.

As the density of devices is over a million per square kilometer, the attack surface has multiple channels that can be exploited and result in threats to data passing through the wire. Common attacks like Supply Chain Attacks, Network attacks, and BotNets can be mutated and replicated with ease across the channels. Other attacks include:
• Man in the middle: The first attacker expropriates the transmitted messages and then attempts to update or delete the messages before forwarding them to the receiver
• Impersonation attack: The attacker effectively determines the identity of the actual communication party and generates a message on behalf of the ‘‘genuine communicating party’’ to send to the recipient.
• Bidding Down: This is a cryptographic attack to abandon the higher quality order of operation when compared to the lower quality…
