RTL Today – Computer security test: GoDaddy apologises for fake Christmas bonus email security test

US web company GoDaddy apologized Thursday after an email that promised employees a Christmas bonus in the midst of the economic crisis turned out to be a computer security test.

“GoDaddy takes the security of our platform extremely seriously. We understand some employees were upset by the phishing attempt and felt it was insensitive, for which we have apologized,” a spokesman for GoDaddy, the largest internet domain management company in the world, told AFP in a statement.

“While the test mimicked real attempts in play today, we need to do better and be more sensitive to our employees,” added the Arizona-based company.

In December, around 500 employees clicked on an email from the company offering a Christmas bonus of $650 and asking them to fill out a form with their personal details.

Two days later, a different message appeared in their inboxes.

“You are receiving this email because you failed our recent phishing test,” the email from GoDaddy’s security chief read, according to Arizona’s Copper Courier newspaper.

The technique of phishing, widely used by computer hackers, sees emails pretending to be a person known to the intended target, with the objective of obtaining information to infiltrate their computer systems.

The test email sparked uproar on social media as millions of Americans have been hit hard by the economic crisis linked to the coronavirus pandemic.

Mobile park families facing eviction get help with Christmas

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Providing Christmas gifts for families in the Campbell Heights mobile home park facing eviction in the coming months was the mission on Saturday, Dec. 19, for one local ministry.

As Clarksville Now reported in mid-November, eviction notices were posted Oct. 20 on trailer doors, alerting residents of the 98 mobile homes comprising the park on Darrow Road near Fort Campbell Boulevard that they had until Jan. 20 to find somewhere else to live.

YAIPaks and Fort Care collaborate

YAIPaks Outreach, the ministry helping the Campbell Heights families, was started by Sherry Nicholson. She found herself homeless once, and once back on her feet she realized she needed to do something to help others in that situation. What started with handing out purses to people experiencing homelessness has turned into a full-fledged ministry, complete with a warehouse in downtown Clarksville.

Debbie Fields, the YAIPaks representative for this event, and volunteer Codie Maile collaborated on the event after hearing about what was happening to the families facing eviction. The pair along with Nichols…

Here’s how to keep yourself safe while online shopping for Christmas deals

MONTREAL —
It’s the most wonderful time of the year… if you’re a scammer. With online retail becoming an even more enticing option during the pandemic, cyber security experts are warning Christmas shoppers to protect themselves.

“They’re going to take advantage of Canadians in a big way, primarily because they know we’re all in front of a computer and we’re all looking for a better price on these things,” said security and privacy advisor Claudiu Popa.

Even before the pandemic, brick-and-mortar sales were down and e-commerce numbers have doubled since last spring. With so many people opting to do their shopping online, Popa said shoppers need to ask themselves questions when they find a deal that seems too good to be true.

Those include: How did you hear about the deal? Was it something you went looking for? Did it come to you as part of a promotion?

“If it’s someone else’s idea about what I should be buying, then I should be suspicious,” said Popa.

Popa also advised Canadians to be wary of emails written with an urgent tone.

“The emails they craft make sure they reach into people’s brains and activate that (fear of missing out) trigger,” he said.

Scams can come in many forms and can arrive via social media, email and on smartphones.

“If it looks like it’s someone you recognize but they’re marking an odd request, take another look at their email address,” Popa advised.

He added that a buyer should double-check a web address before handing out their credit card number or personal information.

“Any business or company that has a form or an interface should have an https lock that indicates that your connection to that website is secure,” he said.
