Sophos takes rare step of citing Microsoft flaw as a must-fix

Sophos generally steers clear of pointing to a single patch from Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday, but is breaking its own rule this month by highlighting one it says can prevent a world of hurt.

The patch – MS15-034 – addresses a bug that could allow remote-code execution on a victim machine, and that can be exploited via any application using Microsoft’s http stack, according to the Sophos Naked Security blog.

Google withdraws from conservative lobbyist service ALEC, citing climate change

Weeks after more than 50 activist groups publicly called upon Google to end its affiliation with the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a controversial nonprofit that helps representatives from corporations meet privately with legislators, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt announced on an NPR program this week that the company has withdrawn its support.

Google’s affiliation with ALEC came to light just over a year ago in a Daily Beast article, and has been a source of criticism of the company in the time since. ALEC is publicly opposed to net neutrality and municipal broadband, and its work is believed to have helped the companies pushing against these efforts get support from lawmakers.

Citing super-busy schedule, Ballmer resigns from Microsoft board

Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has broken another tie with the company, stepping down from the company’s board of directors effective immediately.

Ballmer says in an email to CEO Satya Nadella that he’s too busy with his new ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team, teaching, study and civic contributions to carry on. “The fall will be hectic between teaching a new class and the start of the NBA season so my departure from the board is effective immediately,” he writes.
