Double shooting leaves 1 dead • Comerica Park’s new lights • Racial slur at DSO performance

Officers could be seen with flashlights and cameras in the upstairs floor of a home where a double shooting occurred early Monday morning.

Detroit police say at least one of the victims died from their injuries while the second’s condition remains unknown after gunfire was exchanged in a home on the city’s west side.

Police haven’t released much information on the nature of the shooting, but did say they started getting calls around 3:30 a.m. about reports of shots being fired.

The scene remains active inside the home, located on the 13600 block of Santa Rosa. It’s near Oakman Boulevard and Livernois.

It’s unclear what motive might be at play regarding the shooting.

Police are expected to canvass for witnesses and any home surveillance footage that could tell them anything about what happened.

DSO investigating racial slur incident

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra said it is investigating an incident during one of the group’s performances last week involving a racial slur. In a Facebook post over the weekend, the DSO said it was “deeply disappointed by an incident that took place towards the end of Friday night’s concert when an audience member shouted a racial slur.”

“Racism and bigotry have no place in Orchestra Hall, and behavior like this is unacceptable. We are currently investigating and will enact a permanent ban once we identify the ticketholder,” wrote the post.

The DSO is currently performing many holiday-themed series with Christmas around the corner. On Dec. 9, the night of the incident, the orchestra put on a show that included music from A Charlie Brown Christmas.

“Live music is a profoundly human experience that taps into our emotions and provides us all with a sacred space for listening. We apologize that this space was violated. We appreciate our audiences so much and hope to see you back at Orchestra Hall soon.”

IBM sales jump shows the mainframe is not dead, with hybrid cloud alive and well

At a time when most enterprises are planning cloud deployments and many are reportedly sharpening their mainframe exit strategy, IBM is seeing double-digit growth in its big iron business for the quarter ended September.

The company, which declared its third quarter results on Wednesday, reported a 98% jump in revenue for its z line of mainframe computer in terms of constant currency (that is, eliminating the effect of currency fluctuations).

IBM, which buckets mainframes under its infrastructure line of business, released the z16 mainframe in April before beginning to sell it in the second quarter.

At launch, industry observers said they expected that the performance and scalability of the z16 would pave the way for more use of the mainframes in hybrid-cloud environments. And complementing the jump in mainframes sales, IBM revenue for its hybrid infrastructure business was also up last quarter.

For the quarter ended September, IBM’s infrastructure line of business—which includes hybrid infrastructure, distributed infrastructure, support and mainframes—reported a total revenue of $3.4 billion, up 23.1% year-on-year. Specifically, the company’s hybrid and distributed infrastructure business were up by 41% and 21% respectively.

Meanwhile, in another sign that the mainframe is still alive, Google, during its annual conference Cloud Next 2022 last week, claimed that a significant number of enterprises still run on mainframes when it launched a mainframe migration service, dubbed Dual Run.

Fast Company Is Back From the Dead After Being Hacked

Bouncing back from a hack doesn’t always happen quickly, even at Fast Company. The business news outlet’s website (and its sister sites Inc.com and Mansueto.com) finally came back online on Wednesday afternoon, according to a blog post. The sites were shut down for eight days after Fast Co.’s content management system (CMS) was targeted in a cyber attack.

“I’d like to thank you for your patience…To be sidelined for more than a week was a difficult experience for our team,” wrote Fast Co. editor-in-chief, Brendan Vaughan, in yesterday’s blog post.

On September 25, a hacker remade the news outlet’s homepage, replacing each headline with an “obscene and racist message that proudly claimed credit for the intrusion,” as Vaughan explained it. Then, two days later, the hacker sent out Apple News alerts twice in quick succession with a very similar message, “N*****S TONGUE MY ANUS. THRAX WAS HERE.” The original homepage defacement displayed the same line preceded by “HACKED BY VINNY TROIA.”

Apple News responded by disabling Fast Co.’s channel, and the news outlet opted to shut down all of its sites.

In an unverified post on a hacker forum, the alleged perpetrator “Thrax” provided a lengthy explanation of how they conducted the breach, according to RestorePrivacy and Bleeping Computer. The post described how Thrax was able to easily bypass Fast Co.’s security protocols including HTTP authentication and a uniformly used default password of “pizza123.” According to the hacker, they were able to collect email addresses, usernames, and IP addresses from multiple employees as well as create their own account in the CMS with new credentials.

Without providing much detail, Fast Co. reported on Wednesday that it had conducted a thorough investigation of the breach, and determined “no customer or advertiser information was disclosing in connection with the CMS attack, and that we have taken steps to safeguard against further attacks.”
