War room to fight cyber wars, secure economy

A comprehensive policy must be put together to ring fence cyber fraudsters, mafia and hackers to insulate Indian financial markets.

Even as the RBI readies its plans to launch digital rupee later this year, government and the banking regulator’s big focus will have to be on insulating Indian economy from cyber frauds, graft and securing the country’s financial interests.
Enhancing economic security in the cyber world would be pre-requisite to further opening currency space through digital instruments. Given the cynical innovation in cyber-attacks that have been reported globally, scaling up the firewalls is the only option while making it a breeze for consumers to undertake financial transactions.
On the top of it, introduction of digital currency would lead to new vulnerabilities vis-à-vis fraudsters and possible instability that security breaches could lead to in the economy. Reports said that at least 900 Indians were scammed of over Rs 1,200 crore in an initial public offering of a non-existent crypto currency named “ICO”. This is only the tip of the iceberg in the world of cybercrimes on economic front.
While vetoing the proposal to introduce private crypto currencies, these concerns and impending economic uneasiness were flagged by the country’s central banker and RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will do well in rolling out a policy to secure India’s economic and financial interests in the cyber world. Union Budget to be presented on February 1 should kick off such a policy framework. Securing the financial ecosystem is particularly significant as more and more transactions are going online. As per data released by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), in December 2020 alone, over 4.56 billion transactions involving Rs 8.27 trillion (Rs 8.27 lakh crore) have gone online through united payments interface or UPI.
Akin to consultations on crypto currencies led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, multi-stakeholders meeting on securing Indian economy in cyber space should be kicked off immediately.

LGBT dating site permanently removed from internet in Black Shadow fight

The state prosecution announced on Thursday that it had succeeded in getting the Atraf website for LGBTQ dating permanently removed from the Internet as part of its ongoing battle against attempts by the Black Shadow hacker group to expose the private, personal information of the website’s users.

The website had been temporarily disabled since Black Shadow started posting some of the personal data it hacked.

On November 3, the Authority for the Defense of Privacy announced it was probing the Atraf website for faulty cyberdefenses that might have led to its recently being hacked.

According to Cybersecurity Ventures, cybercrime costs are projected to reach $10.5 trillion by 2025 as levels of account takeover, new account fraud, and other types of fraud continue to rise.

The following content should be cause for great concern. If it brings a fight or flight reaction. It had better be the former.

Trickbot banking

Discovered in 2016, Trickbot’s main functionality was online banking data theft. Kaspersky said that over its five years of activity, the malware has evolved and become multi-modular ranging its activity from data theft to other malware distribution (such as Ryuk ransomware).

The malware spreads over local networks using stolen credentials and vulnerabilities, provides remote access, proxy network traffic, performs brute-force attacks, and downloads other malware.

Backup for huge savings

Acronis, a global leader in cyber protection, announced new research by VansonBourne titled “MSPs Speak: Cybersecurity and the future role of the MSP,” showing that consolidating cybersecurity, backup, and disaster recovery services produces over $229k in savings and reduces breach recovery by 5 hours, on average.

Many MSPs (Managed Service Providers) have added additional tools to their technology stack, using an average number of 4 vendors to provide cybersecurity, backup and/or disaster recovery (DR) services.

The Grief Ransomware gang, which recently made recent headlines for allegedly targeting the National Rifle Association (NRA), is now trying to amplify that news by creating dozens of fake Twitter accounts as a means of ‘promoting’ the attack to journalists and others on the platform.

OKC Mobile Market continues fight for food security on Hunger Action Day

The OKC Mobile Market visited OakRidge Health and Wellness Academy and South Rotary Park on Friday to distribute fresh produce to community residents.

The truck, a partnership between the Oklahoma City County Health Department and St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, provides free grocery items every Friday and final Saturday of every month.

The Mobile Market arrived at the Health and Wellness Academy at 9:30 a.m. Friday. By 9:45 a.m., lines had formed before food officially began being distributed at 10 a.m. By the end of the truck’s second stop at Rotary Park around 1 p.m., nearly 400 people had been served.

“(The health department) has often given out fresh produce at events and other activities, but the Mobile Market helps us provide sustainable access to these essential needs,” said OCCHD Community Outreach Coordinator Yanet Trejo, who regularly works at the market. “For people living with low income or limited transportation, they’ve come to depend on us visiting their neighborhoods and we’re happy to see they want healthy food.”

‘Food deserts’ in Oklahoma City:While food access improves in some parts of OKC, other areas still struggle

Friday was Hunger Action Day, where organizations across the country work to raise awareness of food insecurity and fight hunger.

Some Oklahoma City residents struggle with access to fresh and nutritious food, which is key to maintaining health and reducing illness. Recent reporting showed 119,000 Oklahoma County residents live in low-income, low access “food deserts,” while nearly 51,000 residents live in very low food security.
