Fortinet embraces Cisco, HPE, Nokia

Fortinet is adding Cisco, HPE and Nokia to its stable of partners whose security gear can share information with Fortinet products to improve overall security.

The company is announcing at its Accelerate 2017 customer conference this week that equipment made by these new partners will integrate into the Fortinet Security Fabric via an API to tighten security in core networks, remote devices and the cloud.

The amount of sharing that goes on depends on the individual third-parties’ APIs.

Fortigate Security Fabric is woven from Fortinet products that can communicate among each other to find and analyze threats and let admins see their input in a single window. That’s an upgrade from the initial fabric in which IT teams had to switch among the dashboards for the Fortinet products involved.

Cisco, Fortinet issue patches against NSA malware

Customers of certain Cisco and Fortinet security gear need to  patch exploits made public this week after a purported hack of NSA malware.

Both companies have issued fixes to address exploits that were posted online and after they found the exploits represent real threats to some of their products, including versions of Cisco’s popular PIX and ASA firewalls and versions of Fortinet’s signature Fortigate firewalls.

Other exploits may affect Watchguard and TOPSEC products, but those companies did not immediately respond to inquiries. When they do this story will be updated.

New security fabric to unite Fortinet gear with that of other vendors

Fortinet is embarking on a mission for some of its firewalls and other products and those of third-party vendors to work together to boost security across core networks, remote devices and the cloud.

Called Fortinet Security Fabric, the architecture relies on direct communications inherent among certain of its own products (such as the FortiGate next-generation firewall, FortiWeb Web application firewall, FortiMail email security and FortiSandbox advanced threat protection system) as well as with those of other vendors via APIs.

Each third-party device can participate in sharing information depending on the capabilities of its API, says John Maddison, Fortinet’s senior vice president of products and solutions.

Dell Oro Group: Check Point, Fortinet, Palo Alto making gains in security appliances

There’s a continuing shift among the top security appliance vendors that has Cisco remaining at the top of the sales heap but with Check Point Software, Fortinet and Palo Alto Networks making gains and pressuring Juniper Networks, according to new research from Dell’Oro Group.

The research – which includes new data from the second quarter of this year as well as projections for next year and historical data going back to 2012 – has Cisco, with 24.9% of the network security appliance market as measured by manufacturer’s revenue, solidly in first place during the latest quarter. It is followed by Check Point (9.3%), Fortinet (8%), Palo Alto (5.2%) and Juniper (4.8%) to round out the top five.
