How Organisations Should Guard Against Potential Cyber Security Threats

Data protection is a rising concern worldwide, for individuals who are more vulnerable to online attacks given the lack of awareness and infrastructure as well as organisations whose systems are used by individual employees.

According to a report by cyber security software company Norton LifeLock released earlier this year, a whopping 59 per cent of Indian adults had their data exposed to cyber criminals in 2020. Also, a report by IBM showed that Indian organisations suffered a loss of over Rs 16.5 crore during the pandemic (May 2020 to March 2021) due to data breach.

Breach of personal data can be alarming, especially if it’s sensitive information, including your email address, photos, IP address and biometric data.

“Cyber crime is a threat to day-to-day operations and a data breach or cyber attack might cause business and reputational damage as well as regulatory and compliance issues. Owing to the nature of risk, cyber risk management is an area of utmost priority for businesses today,” says Wilfred Singler, senior director, market development and digital solutions, CRIF India

So, how do individuals end up compromising data for organisations? Zaki Qureshey, director general, Hyderabad Security Cluster, says, “Mobile devices, both corporate-owned and bring your own device (BYOD) [personal], are now the dominant productivity platform in any enterprise organization: 60 per cent of enterprise endpoints are mobile, according to Microsoft.”

However, mobile devices are under-protected and disproportionately targeted, he adds. “These devices operate extensively outside of corporate firewalls, in the hands of users who may not prioritise precautions like vetting Wi-Fi networks or keeping their devices patched and updated. Mobiles often represent a wandering corporate data repository. That’s why Zimperium (one of the leading mobile security solutions, which offers only real-time, on-device, machine learning-based protection against Android, iOS, and Chromebook threats) detects an average of 600 million threat events involving enterprise mobile devices daily.”

Family of Security Guard Shot in Oakland Speaks Out, Asks Public for Help in Finding Suspect – NBC Bay Area

The family of the private security guard who died after being shot while on assignment in Oakland last week spoke out Friday, asking the public’s help in seeking the person responsible.

“We’ve heard so far that there were people doing video with their cell phones .. and we’d like them,” said wife Virginia Nishita. “I beg you, please come forward.”

Kevin’s wife said she was stunned Kevin was shot in an attempted armed robbery of a news crew in downtown Oakland on Nov. 24 and died days later. But not surprised her husband put himself in jeopardy for the sake of others.

“That was his personality, to be that protector, to be that brave one,” she said. “He just wanted to protect people. Not just his family but others as well.”

Still the senseless nature of the crime has left the family heartbroken and demanding answers.

“We just need the closure. We don’t like this open, not knowing how someone we loved passed away. We just need to know and have peace,” and said Kevin’s daughter Maureen Campos.

Kevin was employed by Star Protection Agency California and working with a KRON4 reporter at the time of the shooting.

“He didn’t deserve this. He was retired,” said Kevin’s son Enrique Nishita. “He just looking to stay busy, we just wish he could come home.”

The family says it is still working on memorial services and they take some satisfaction in hearing Oakland is now taking action including a plan to hire more police officers.

“This is justice for Kevin. He was a security guard, and he was out there to protect the newscast … and we need justice for him,” said Virginia.

A reward of $32,500 is being offered to anyone with information that may lead to an arrest.

Astroworld security guard pricked in neck with needle, Houston police say

A “needle” wielding assailant suspected of injecting at least one person with a possible opioid may have sparked the panic that killed at least eight people and injured 300 others during a stampede at rapper Travis Scott’s concert in Houston, authorities said Saturday.

The tragedy happened Friday at NRG Park when a mass of people among the 50,000 concertgoers at the sold-out show “began to compress” to the front of the stage at around 9:15 p.m., sparking mayhem according to Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña.

The preliminary investigation found a security guard was jabbed in the neck while he was among the fans packed into the park for the first of two nights at Astroworld, a festival Scott founded in 2018, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said at a Saturday afternoon press conference.

Police have not yet interviewed the guard, Finner said, but medical staff that treated him said he was administered Narcan, a drug used to revive people who have overdosed on opioids, and they saw what looked like a needle mark on his neck.

Narcan was used to revive some other concertgoers as well, Finner said, but he was unable to say how many.

“We do know that there were several, many, instances where they did administer Narcan on site,” he said.

“This is now a criminal investigation that is going to involve our homcide division, as well as narcotics,” Finner said during a press conference Saturday afternoon.

At least 11 of the 25 people taken to area hospitals were in cardiac arrest, Houston Fire Chief Samuel Pena said. Officials said 13 remained hospitalized late Saturday, including five under the age of 18 and at least one 10-year-old. Officials did not detail their injuries.

Others among the dead and injured were trampled as the crowd surged toward the stage, Finner said.

Some 300 people were treated at a field hospital set at the stadium during the “mass casualty incident,” authorities said.

Teen Girl, Security Guard Shot Outside of Bronzeville High School, Chicago Fire Officials Say – NBC Chicago

A student and a security guard were seriously wounded in a shooting Tuesday afternoon outside a high school in the Bronzeville neighborhood.

The 14-year-old girl and the 46-year-old guard were shot around 3:20 p.m. outside Wendell Phillips Academy High School, 244 E. Pershing Road, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.

The child was shot three times in the abdomen and taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, according to Chicago police spokesman Michelle Tannehill. She was listed in good condition.

The guard, shot in the arm, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, she said. Langford said he was listed in serious condition.

In September, two 15-year-old students from Simeon Career Academy were shot and killed on the same day in separate attacks.

“It’s ridiculous, you know the kids have to go to school, it’s just very unsafe now because we don’t know if the kids are gonna be safe going to school or picking up after school,” said an employee of Chicago’s Home of Chicken and Waffles restaurant, around the corner from Phillips.

The employee, who did not want to be named, said they heard about four or five shots, then saw police cars flood the area.

“I just wish our city would be safer, I just wish it was more safety,” she said. “Our kids have to grow up here, our kids have to go to school here, we have a restaurant to run here. I just pray for our safety.”
