Aircraft part manufacturer says cybercrime incident cost it $54 million

An Austrian airplane component maker for Boeing and Airbus said earlier this week a cybercrime-related fraud has caused €50 million (US$ 54 million) in damages.

FACC AG said in its third quarter results report that the accounting department of its FACC Operations unit was targeted.

While many businesses have had brushes with cybercrime in the last few years, FACC’s large damages figure stands out.

“The management board has taken immediate structural measures and is evaluating damages and insurance claims,” the document said.

It characterized the incident as an “outflow” of €50 million of “liquid funds.” The loss does not pose an economic threat to the company, it said.

Dow Jones & Co. discloses breach, incident likely related to Scottrade

On Friday, in a letter to customers, the CEO of Dow Jones & Co. disclosed a data breach affecting 3,500 people. Based on public details, the incident seems similar to a breach reported by Scottrade last week that impacted 4.6 million investors.

In his letter, Dow Jones Chief Executive William Lewis said that law enforcement officials informed the company about the potential breach in late July.

After bringing in outside help, an investigation turned up a confirmation that the systems housing the customer data was accessed – but there is no proof that data was exfiltrated. The investigators also determined that the attackers had access to the system between August 2012 and July 2015.

Resilient Systems arms security teams with automated incident responses

Resilient systems has a new software module for its incident-response platform that lets network security pros respond quicker and with more certainty to attacks.

Called Action Module, it makes it possible to have automated responses at the ready so when actual incidents arise network admins can push a button to respond.

Because responses execute automatically when triggered, slow manual steps are taken out of the equation, making responses timelier and eliminating human error that might otherwise come into play.

“The upside is speed and effectiveness,” says Bruce Schneier, CTO of Resilient, “getting it fast and getting it right – no making mistakes. We’re talking about plumbing, but it’s really needed plumbing.”

Kaspersky: ‘A very bad incident’ awaits critical infrastructure

Cyber-terrorism attacks against power grids, water supply systems, chemical plants and other critical infrastructure loom as a threat that could become harsh reality before slow-moving agencies act to secure them better, says the head of Kaspersky Lab.

Organizations that run these facilities using supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) gear are still gathering data about threats and aren’t close to implementing new defenses to counter them, says Eugene Kaspersky, founder and CEO of the company.
