NEW TECH: DigiCert Document Signing Manager leverages PKI to advance electronic signatures

Most of us, by now, take electronic signatures for granted.

Related: Why PKI will endure as the Internet’s secure core

Popular services, like DocuSign and Adobe Sign, have established themselves as convenient, familiar tools to conduct daily commerce, exclusively online. Yet electronic signatures do have their security limitations. That’s why “wet” signatures, i.e. signing in the presence of a notary, remains a requirement for some transactions involving high dollars or very sensitive records.

Clearly, a more robust approach to verifying identities in the current and future digital landscape would be useful. After all, conducting business transactions strictly online was already on the rise before Covid 19, a trend that only accelerated due to the global pandemic.

And this is why DigiCert recently introduced DigiCert® Document Signing Manager (DSM) – an advanced hosted service designed to increase the level of assurance of the identities of persons signing documents digitally.

I had the chance to learn more about this new tool from Brian Trzupek, DigiCert’s senior vice president of product DigiCert is best known as a Certificate Authority (CA) and a supplier of services to manage Public Key Infrastructure. And PKI, of course, is the behind-the-scenes authentication and encryption framework on which the Internet is built.

Trzupek outlined how DSM allows for legally-binding documents with auditability and management of signers. “It adds trust and security into each signature, with the ability to easily work with third-party signing workflows such as Adobe, DocuSign, or other signing workflow platforms,” he says.

As digital transformation has quickened, it has become clear that electronic signatures are destined to become even more pervasively used to conduct business remotely. DigiCert is bringing PKI to bear to help make that happen.  Here are the main takeaways from our discussion:

Leveraging PKI

The experience on many signing platforms goes something like this: you receive a document via email, you select a signature font, and then you click to insert that signature on highlighted areas of the document. You conclude by clicking submit and when the document…

How a Password Manager could improve security for your small business – Saddleworth Independent

By Peter Dorotiak, Director

LOTS of people re-use passwords for multiple accounts or use common password that could be hacked. Why? People struggle to remember strong passwords.

Having a strong password is essential!

The NCSC (National Cyber Security Centre) published a survey (https://tinyurl.com/22ut7np3) on the most hacked passwords and passwords commonly used by hackers. Do any of your passwords appear on this list? Some included premier league football teams, musicians, and family names.

Sharing and reusing passwords can also be a risk. In a business setting, different staff may require access to various online accounts which require password access. This can pose a problem. Do you share the password? Do you write it down? Do you reuse the same password?

These issues can be alleviated by using a password manager and here is a brief overview of the benefits.

A password manager is an app that securely stores your passwords. This means you can have very complex passwords as you do not have to remember them.

A password manager app can be installed onto your phone, tablet, computer, or as an extension in your web browser.

When you require access to a website or app, the password manager will recall the relevant username and password and fill it in for you. This means you do not need to remember the password or type it.

Professional password managers have many great features for small businesses. One is the ability for multiple users to use the app, but to also hide the passwords from them. This means that users can access whatever accounts they are allocated without knowing or seeing the password.

If any staff member leaves, you simply remove their access from the app and you do not have to change all your passwords.

Many apps will alert you if your reuse passwords for different accounts and prompt you to change them. Re-using passwords is a security risk because if a hacker steals one of your passwords, they will try to access other accounts using the same one.

NSWC Crane Division Manager Awarded Civilian Service Commendation Medal > Naval Sea Systems Command > Saved News Module

Clint Seyer, Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division’s (NSWC Crane) manager for the Expeditionary Electronic Warfare (EW) Systems Division, was recently  awarded the Department of the Navy (DON) Civilian Service Commendation Medal (CSCM) in recognition of significant contributions to the United States (U.S.) Navy. Seyer was recognized for significant efforts during his 18-year career at NSWC Crane Division.  He developed short and long term strategies that resulted in national leadership recognition in the Electronic Warfare (EW) mission area.

Seyer’s award commendation letter reads, “…your dedication and supervision to the Expeditionary EW mission resonates in every aspect of your leadership and drive…”

CSCM recognizes performance well above what is expected of an individual, and above the degree of excellence reflected in a performance evaluation. Performance is at the equivalent level of the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal.

Seyer began his career at Crane in 2003 as the Quality/Safety Focal Point where he provided quality systems and safety support to the Electro-Optics/Chemical and Bio Sensors Division. He was selected as the Chief Strategist for the Spectrum Warfare Department in 2013. In that position, he was responsible for the department’s strategic planning efforts where he successfully worked to develop short and long term strategies resulting in achievement of national leadership in the EW mission area. In 2018, Mr. Seyer was selected as the Division Manager for the Expeditionary EW Systems Division where he is responsible for management and oversight of a division team supporting several expeditionary EW Systems and direct workload execution of multiple Acquisition Category (ACAT) II programs impacting U.S. Navy, U.S. Marines, and U.S. Special Forces positioned around the globe.

As the Chief Strategist, Mr. Seyer positioned NSWC Crane to be a leader in EW Systems among the Department of Defense, working directly with the Spectrum Warfare Systems Department Director to make strategic plans that have enabled successful execution of our Command’s strategic intent. As the Division…
