Govt Alerts Mobile Users, Issues High-Risk Warning Over Malware Attacks

Mumbai: The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued an advisory warning citizens about emerging cybercrime, and malvertising (malware advertising). Malvertising is a type of cyber security attack used by criminals to drop malware to redirect to a malicious website by tricking the user into clicking on online advertisements that may look legitimate. Upon installation, the malware can damage files, monitor the user’s activity and steal sensitive data stored in the device.

According to the advisory, malware is a piece of malicious code inserted in an application, program or system by threat actors. They can infect your systems and perform malicious operations. “Some of the key signs that indicate malware are, emails, messages from your email/social media accounts in your device are sent without your permission, web browsers keep redirecting to unknown suspicious web pages, pop-up ad messages with security warnings and urge you to download and install the security. Product and anti-malwareprograms are disabled automatically,” the advisory states.

“Avoid clicking on suspicious emails, links, and sites from unknown sources. As soon as you click on any malicious link, your mobile can be hacked or your data can be stolen. Browse only secure and authorised websites. Always keep your computer software/browser up to date. Maintain backup of your data regularly. Install software like pop-up/ ad-blocker to block the malicious advertisements appearing on websites. Install antivirus and antimalware solutions on your devices and keep them updated. Hover over the images/links to find the actual link. Do not install any apps through links received on chats or social media posts. Check the links before clicking,” the advisory stated.

Mobile internet services to be restored after over four months

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that mobile internet services will be restored across the state from Saturday, PTI reported.

The Bharatiya Janata Party government in the state had shut down both broadband and mobile internet services in the wake of ethnic violence between the Meiteis and the Kukis that broke out on May 3. Over 200 people have been killed in the state since the conflict broke out.

The government had said that it took the decision to prevent people from spreading disinformation and rumours on social media.

On July 25, the government had conditionally lifted ban on broadband internet services. It had allowed for internet to be provided through Internet Lease Lines, used typically by businesses, and Fibre to the Home connections, which are more expensive to install than traditional broadband ones.

However, the July order did not allow internet connections through WiFi hotspots. Social media websites and virtual private networks also remained blocked.

On Saturday, Singh told reporters that as the situation in Manipur had improved, the government had decided to restore mobile internet services.

The chief minister also said that the Free Movement Regime that allows people from India and Myanmar to travel up to 16 kilometers inside each other’s territory has been suspended. He added that the Manipur government has requested the Centre to permanently close the agreement.

The BJP government has alleged on a number of occasions that the violence in Manipur was due to the influx of Kukis from Myanmar following the military coup in 2021 in the Southeast Asian country.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had claimed in Parliament in August that the increase of Kukis from Myanmar into Manipur had led to anxieties among the majority Meitei community.

Mobile Verification Toolkit (MVT) is a collection of utilities to simplify and automate the process of gathering forensic traces helpful to identify a potential compromise of Android and iOS devices.

Mobile Verification Toolkit

MVT supports using public indicators of compromise (IOCs) to scan mobile devices for potential traces of targeting or infection by known spyware campaigns. MVT is a forensic research tool intended for technologists and investigators. Using it requires understanding the basics of forensic analysis and using command-line tools. MVT is not intended for end-user self-assessment.

It was developed and released by the Amnesty International Security Lab in July 2021 in the context of the Pegasus Project, along with a technical forensic methodology. It continues to be maintained by Amnesty International and other contributors.

Mobile Verification Toolkit key features

MVT’s capabilities are continuously evolving, but some of its key features include:

  • Decrypt encrypted iOS backups.
  • Process and parse records from numerous iOS system and apps databases, logs, and system analytics.
  • Extract installed applications from Android devices.
  • Extract diagnostic information from Android devices through the adb protocol.
  • Compare extracted records to a provided list of malicious indicators in STIX2 format.
  • Generate JSON logs of extracted records and separate JSON logs of all detected malicious traces.
  • Generate a unified chronological timeline of extracted records, along with a timeline of all detected malicious traces.

Mobile Verification Toolkit is available for download on GitHub. The developers do not want MVT to enable privacy violations of non-consenting individuals. To achieve this, MVT is released under its license.
