Cyber Security Today, Week in Review for Friday, Nov. 26, 2021

Welcome to Cyber Security Today. It’s the Week in Review edition for the week ending Friday November 26th. I’m Howard Solomon, contributing writer on cybersecurity for ITWorldCanada.com.

In a few minutes Dinah Davis, the Canadian-based vice-president of research and development at managed service provider Arctic Wolf will be with me for a discussion. But first a look back at some of the news from the past seven days:

GoDaddy, one of the biggest internet hosting providers, has admitted that a compromised password led to the hack of its managed WordPress service. The email addresses of up to 1.2 million active and inactive WordPress customers were copied. Worse is that usernames and passwords for a number of subscribers to the hosted service were exposed, forcing GoDaddy to make those users reset their passwords. Dinah and I will discuss this incident.

Windows administrators were warned to watch for suspicious changes in users’ access privileges. This comes after a researcher released proof of concept code for a new Windows zero-day vulnerability. If a person has access to a computer they may be able to easily upgrade their privileges to administrator using the exploit. Cisco Systems says hackers are already trying to take advantage of the vulnerability.

How fast can a hacker find an improperly protected server or database open to the internet? Sometimes, within hours. This is according to a report released this week on a test by Palo Alto Networks. It set up a number of honeypots on the internet to discover what happens. Dinah and I will discuss what the company calls shocking results that are a lesson for IT managers.

The Conti ransomware gang has suffered a temporary blow. Researchers at the Swiss cybersecurity firm called Prodaft published a report this week saying they managed to get into the group’s payment portal. They came away with valuable information for law enforcement agencies and IT security teams. According to one news service Conti briefly had to take down the portal, which is where ransomware victims make payments. It’s back online.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Starts Receiving New Update In India With Nov 2021 Security Patch

|

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra users in India can now update their devices to the latest Android 11 update. The new OTA update (Build- G998BXXS3AUJ7/G998BOXM3AUIE/G998BXXU3AUIF) measures 222.97MB and brings the November 2021 security patch to the premium Galaxy smartphones alongside some minor bug fixes and device stability improvements. The official changelog of the new software update only mentions the security enhancements of the flagship Galaxy handset.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Starts Receiving New Update In India

Notably, the latest software update was rolled out to Galaxy S21 Ultra users in Germany on November 25. It might be the last incremental update before the Galaxy S21-series handsets receive the official Android 12 update. The Galaxy S21-series devices have so far received three One UI 4.0 beta updates.
If you own the premium Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, you should receive a notification for the new OTA build.

You can manually check for the update from the ‘Software Update’ section. Since it’s an incremental update, the process shouldn’t take much of your time and internet data.

Meanwhile, if you are waiting for the major Android 12 update, here’s some must check out features of the One UI 4.0 coming to your Samsung handset. The One UI 4.0 brings at last 50+ new features to the Galaxy S21-series handsets.

• Redesigned Home screen widgets including a new Weather App and YouTube, Spotify widget with better controls
• Smoother and more intuitive animations
• Android 12’s Privacy Dashboard
• Redesigned Quick Panel
• Upgraded Dark mode
• New Charging animation
• Revamped Samsung keyboard
• Cleaner & simpler Camera layout with intuitive Pro mode
• Useful additions in the native Gallery app
• New features in the native photo/video editor

Besides, several new features and tweaks have been added to the One UI 4.0. Sadly, the One UI 4.0 won’t offer the Google Pixel’s Material You design language. The best we can expect from Samsung is to offer some Material You wallpapers and the feature-packed theme engine for a range of customization features to the Galaxy users.

If you can’t wait for the official One UI 4.0 update, you can register for the One UI 4.0 beta…

Baltimore Co. Public Schools cancel classes on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 due to ransomware attack

Baltimore County public schools will be closed, and distance learning canceled, on Monday, Nov. 30 and Tuesday, Dec. 1 due to a recent ransomware attack on the school district’s IT system.

Baltimore County public schools will be closed, and distance learning canceled, on Monday, Nov. 30 and Tuesday, Dec. 1 due to a recent ransomware attack on the school district’s IT system.

The school system’s offices will be open and staff will receive information about the upcoming week, according to a message posted on the district’s Twitter feed.

The attack was discovered on Wednesday, Nov. 25 and according to the county, investigators and school staff have been working through the Thanksgiving break trying to get the school’s system back on line.

The attack came shortly after a state audit revealed the school system’s vulnerability.

In spite of a long weekend of work, a tweet sent out on Saturday, Nov. 28 said the county’s schools will not be able to hold instruction at the start of next week.

Schools will distribute meals for students on Monday and Wednesday at over 300 locations.

The school system called it a “crisis” and thanked its constituents for their patience as they worked toward a resolution.

On Friday, a state audit showed the county had not safeguarded sensitive personal information, according to a story published by The Associated Press. The news of the audit came Tuesday, followed by the ransomware attack a day later.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, 115,000 students are taking classes online. With the shutdown, they will not be able to receive instruction at the beginning of the upcoming week.
