House Passes Cyber Literacy, Mobile Security, 6G Study Bills – MeriTalk

The House of Representatives on Dec. 1 approved a pair of cybersecurity bills, along with a bill that would create a task force to study the future of 6G wireless technologies.

All three bills passed by large bipartisan margins on motions to suspend the rules for their passage.

The cybersecurity bills would look to boost the nation’s cybersecurity literacy, and get more information on the current cybersecurity of mobile networks.

The trio of bills all made their way to full House passage, after being approved by the House Energy and Commerce Committee in July.

Cyber Literacy and Mobile Network Visibility

The House passed the American Cybersecurity Literacy Act and the Understanding Cybersecurity of Mobile Networks Act by margins of 408-17 and 404-19, respectively, signaling broad support for the pair of bills.

The American Cybersecurity Literacy Act would establish a national cybersecurity literacy campaign to help citizens understand how to mitigate cyber risks by teaching them how to identify phishing attempts, the benefits of changing passwords, using multi-factor authentication, and more.

Meanwhile, the Understanding Cybersecurity of Mobile Networks Act directs the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information to submit a report to Congress on the current cybersecurity of mobile networks and any vulnerabilities.

“Offensive cyber operations conducted by America’s adversaries and cyber criminals are growing more prevalent and more sophisticated by the day,” Rep. Adam Kinzinger, D-Ill., sponsor of the American Cybersecurity Literacy Act and original co-sponsor for the Understanding Cybersecurity of Mobile Networks Act, said in a release.

“More must be done to push back, and I’m pleased to see two of my bipartisan cybersecurity bills pass the House with overwhelming support today,” Rep. Kinzinger added. “Taken together, these bills will strengthen our cyber posture by educating the public about best practices to keep them more secure, and by identifying vulnerabilities in our mobile telecommunications networks and infrastructure.”

Eva Maydell MEP: “There is not a single day that passes without a cyberattack somewhere”

The European Peoples’ Party (EPP) has warned the West: always be ready for a cyber attack.

“In today’s world, it is not about whether a company or institution will be hacked, the question is whether you are prepared and resilient when it happens. Today’s vote is a clear signal that we stand for the strong cybersecurity protection of European citizens, businesses and institutions”, declared Eva Maydell MEP, the EPP Group’s negotiator of the Directive dealing with measures for a high common level of cybersecurity across the Union.

Members of the Industry, Research and Energy Committee will today approve new rules to enhance the European Union’s cyber capacity and resilience in order to respond to the growing threats brought about by digitalisation.

Throughout the negotiations, Maydell had to take into account the increasing number and sophistication of cyberattacks around the world. EU data strikingly shows that 2/5 of EU users have experienced security-related problems. 1/8 of businesses have been affected by cyberattacks. The annual cost of cybercrime to the global economy was estimated at €5.5 trillion by the end of 2020. This is double that of 2015.

“There is not a single day that passes without a cyberattack somewhere – Solar Winds, Colonial Pipeline, the Irish Health Service Executive, to this very week, as Microsoft announced that Russian-backed hackers have been targeting cloud service companies since summer. The updated Cybersecurity Directive is a tool to enhance cyber capacity and to provide for the safe digital transition of Europe. Our economy and public life will not go backwards on the digitalisation process”, stated Maydell.

The Directive puts emphasis on the maturity levels of smaller companies, which often have a false sense of security, thinking that they are not an ‘interesting target’ for hackers.

MEPs also strengthened the requirements for the Computer Security Incidents Response Teams (CSIRTs), so these teams are able to monitor networks in real or near real time and detect anomalies. Members insisted that CSIRTs have the ability to investigate cyber…

Utah’s ‘Porn Filter’ Law Passes the State Legislature

If you work in cybersecurity, chances are you’re pretty tired by now. On the heels of Russia’s devastating Solarwinds hack that came to light in December, Chinese hackers have mounted what appears to be a full-on assault against Microsoft Exchange Servers, hitting at least 30,000 servers in the United States alone. China’s spies will whittle down the target list from there for further compromise, but this mess is still going to take a very long time to clean up.

Speaking of messes, apps in both the App Store and Google Play Store still leak too much data too much  of the time, according to a new study from mobile security firm Zimperium. Thanks to misconfigured cloud settings, tens of thousands of apps on both platforms inadvertently expose user information like financial data and medical test results. A different category of mistake was found over at far-right platform Gab, which got hacked very very thoroughly, apparently due to a coding error introduced by the platform’s CTO.

Cybersecurity entrepreneur turned man on the run John McAfee was indicted Friday for his alleged involvement in two cryptocurrency scams. Twitch released its first transparency report this week after a decade of, well, not doing that. Microsoft has started testing its decentralized IDs in the real world, if you wanted to put your college diploma on the blockchain. We took a look at how Myanmar’s citizens are dealing with a prolonged internet shutdown during that country’s military coup. And we published our sixth installment of 2034, a fictional account of a near-future war with China that feels all too real.

And there’s more! Each week we round up all the news we didn’t cover in depth. Click on the headlines to read the full stories. And stay safe out there.

Conservative lawmakers in Utah have passed a handful of anti-pornography laws in the last few years, including the declaration of a public health crisis in 2016. Now they’ve kicked things up a few notches. Measure HB72 won approval in the state senate this week, and in the house last month, meaning it’s headed for the governor’s desk for a signature. The law would mandate that every new smartphone and tablet sold in the state would come with a…
