Cyber security training: Insights for future professionals

In this era of digitalisation, the world is witnessing exponential growth in incidents that compromise the security of information owned by businesses or governments. Recently the Royal Mail’s overseas deliveries suffered severe disruption due to a ransomware attack linked to Russian criminals. In 2022, around 50 Indian government websites were hacked and eight data breaches were reported. These included a ransomware attack on some servers at the All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) that paralysed operations of the premier medical institute in India for many weeks.

The tremendous increase in such incidents has fuelled the demand for qualified IT professionals who could prevent cyber attacks on critical government and business IT assets. But there exists a considerable mismatch in the supply-demand situation of qualified cyber security professionals. To complicate this further, professionals entering this field face difficulty in deciding what skills they should acquire. This article explores what paths are available in cyber security training by analysing reports released by two eminent associations in the field of information security.

The first report discussed is the latest edition of the annual report on the cyber security workforce released by (ISC)2 titled 2022 Cyber Security Workforce Study. This report presents insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by cyber security professionals around the world. The report was prepared after conducting a survey among 11,779 cyber security professionals. The study estimates that the size of the global cyber security workforce in 2022 was 4.7 million people and the gap in the global cyber security workforce stood at 3.4 million people, which is an increase of 26.6% at the year-over-year (YoY) level.

Clearly, there exists a wide gap between the supply and demand of cyber security professionals, and the shortage is more evident in the EMEA and APAC regions where the YoY increase is greater than 50%. Half of the cyber security professionals under age 30 who participated in the survey started their careers in IT and then moved to cyber security. Both vendor-neutral certifications (e.g., (ISC)2, ISACA or CompTIA)…

2023—What Lies Ahead

Rajesh Garg is the executive vice president and chief digital officer, head of cybersecurity, at Yotta Infrastructure Solutions, LLP.

“Over 30% of company boards will have a dedicated cybersecurity committee that’s overseen by a qualified board member. Also,” continues Rajesh, “more than 30% of enterprises will deploy cloud-based security web gateways, cloud access security brokers, and zero trust networks.”

Diego Del Portillo is an IT infrastructure analyst at Puerto De Barranquilla in Colombia.

“Attacks will continue to become more complex because infrastructures are becoming more complex, as well,” says Diego. “Ten years ago, you could protect your infrastructure with firewalls and antivirus products, but today you need to use many platforms to be safe.

“Companies must strengthen their cybersecurity bench with professionals who have up-to-date skillsets to help address the growing complexity of attacks. For that reason, the focus should be as much on professionals as on technology.”

Ankur Mittal is a senior technical engineer at Hitachi Systems Micro Clinic Pvt.

“Deep fakes will become a greater concern because they use AI to mimic human activities. As a result, they can be used to enhance social engineering attacks. And the continued commercialization of advanced applications lowers the bar for creating deep fakes. This could lead to real-time impersonations over voice and video applications that cybercriminals will use to pass biometric analysis. It will pose a significant challenge and secure…

EC-Council to Increase Development of Ethical Hackers to Address Mounting Shortage of Cybersecurity Professionals

TAMPA, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sep 7, 2022–

EC-Council, the leading global cybersecurity certification body, has announced the release of its flagship Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) version 12 program, and plans to train up 100,000 new ethical hackers worldwide within 5 years to address the severe shortage of Certified Ethical Hackers across the globe.

Known for the de-facto global standard in building ethical hacking skill since 2003, EC-Council’s new CEH Version 12 program will be based on an entirely new learning framework incorporating a novel Learn, Certify, Engage, Compete methodology to create a new breed of skilled ethical hackers.

“The United States faces a severe shortage of skilled cybersecurity professionals today, putting companies, government agencies, infrastructure, and Americans themselves at great risk,” said Jay Bavisi, Founder and CEO of EC-Council Group. “EC-Council’s Certified Ethical Hacker program, mandated by many government agencies today, is the gold standard for ethical hacker training, and the new learning model will help train up our supply of cybersecurity professionals with real skills and experience.”

A recent report by Cybersecurity Ventures pointed out that the gap of unfilled cybersecurity positions has grown by 350% between 2013 and 2021, with a current cybersecurity job vacancy rate of nearly 50%, according to CyberSeek, a project supported by the US Department of Commerce’s National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE). This shortage of available talent has real world consequences. According to a recent report from Fortinet, almost 80% of breaches were due to skill gaps that exist in organizations around the globe.

Bavisi added “Cybersecurity jobs evolve very fast, and we need professionals that have a broad range of skills that can be deployed in the real world,” The new four-phase Learn, Certify, Engage Compete learning framework makes the CEH program the first program of its kind to actually take trainees beyond knowledge and have them put their skills to practical use.”

CEH today is relied upon by the US Department of Defense and other government agencies and used in 7 of the Fortune 10, 47 of the Fortune 100…
