Eastern Upper Peninsula Rural Communities To Receive High Speed Broadband Internet

$3 Million CARES Grant Awarded to Merit Network

ANN ARBOR, Mich., May 5, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Merit Network was awarded a $2.99 million Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act Recovery Assistance Grant to support construction of 70 miles of middle-mile fiber optic infrastructure in the Upper Peninsula.

The infrastructure corridor project, named Leveraging Infrastructure for Transforming the Upper Peninsula (LIFT-UP) will pass through Chippewa, Luce and Mackinac counties. This fiber will enable local internet service providers to interconnect with Merit’s middle-mile backhaul to bring reliable, high-speed broadband internet to rural and remote communities in Michigan’s Eastern Upper Peninsula.

The EUPConnect Collaborative, led by the Easter Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District (EUPISD) and the Eastern Upper Peninsula Regional Planning and Development Commission (EUPRPDC) will collaborate with Merit on the project. They have collaborated with Merit’s Michigan Moonshot initiative and the Quello Center for Media and Information Policy at Michigan State University for several years on citizen-scientist crowdsourced research to identify and map broadband access and adoption statistics regionally. An understanding of the prevalence and impact of the digital divide for the region was a first step in developing a blueprint for equitable access.

“The Eastern UP Regional Planning and Development Commission is excited to see this significant EDA investment in broadband for the region. Broadband availability and accessibility has long been the highest priority in our region’s Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy. The MERIT LIFT-UP project will provide much needed investment to move the needle on this issue and make the region more economically competitive on the national and global stage,” said Jeff Hagan, CEO of EUP Regional Planning.

“Every community deserves access to modern digital infrastructure to support education, telemedicine, public safety, workforce needs and economic development, regardless of geographic location. This new federal investment in the Eastern UP helps advance this goal, and…

Here’s how much snow Pueblo may receive on New Year’s Day

Pueblo could receive 1-to-2 inches of snow on New Year’s Day according to the National Weather Service Pueblo.

A storm system will move in late New Year’s Eve and snow will continue into New Year’s Day, according to meteorologist Cameron Simcoe.

“(The system is) just a big old wave in the jet stream… a big old trough,” he said. “It’s going to pass right over Colorado. It’s a strong dynamic system that will help a lot of bringing moisture to the area.”

Simcoe said the chances of snow are a little better than 30% and that Pueblo could see up to 2 inches of snow by the end of Jan 1.

The temperatures and wind chill will also be very cold on New Year’s Day, according to Simcoe. While the high on New Year’s Eve is expected to be around 54 degrees, as it cools the system will move in bringing rain then snow. Precipitation is predicted to begin falling between 11 a.m. Dec. 31 and 4 a.m. Jan. 1. The low on Dec. 31 is predicted to be 14.

On New Year’s Day, the high is expected to only reach 30 and the low is predicted to be 7. The wind chill, however, will likely make it feel colder, according to Simcoe.

“It will be even colder on Sunday morning,” he said.

After the snow and cold, Simcoe said temperatures will return to the high 40s and 50s.

“Sunday it’ll start warming up pretty quickly,” he said. “Then we’ll probably be at, if not average, above average (temperatures), probably again until the next system comes through probably midweek.”

Simcoe said it’s still too early to tell if the system that moves in next week will bring more moisture.

He said he wouldn’t be surprised if the system meant snow for higher elevations.

“It’s a bit too early to tell if there’s snow, but I will say the mountains (will get snow) probably because they always get something when some sort system comes through,” he said. “Other than that, it’s too unclear at this time. Unfortunately.”

Gigaset Android phones receive malware posing as software update

Gigaset Android Phone Malware Trojan

Remember Gigaset? The Android phone maker released the Gigaset QV830 and QV1030 Android tablets back in 2013. It then entered the smartphone market with sleek devices and modern specs in 2015. More Gigaset Android devices have been introduced but unfortunately, it seems a malware has infected several of them. According to a report, it appears to be a supply-chain attack caused by a Trojan that is downloaded and installed on a device. It disguises as a software update but is actually a malware.

It is said to be a very annoying malware because it can do a lot of things like send people SMS to spread malware, fetch other malicious apps, and open browser windows among others. Our source said the updates were actually seeded as early as April 1.

There is no word on the cause of the attack but there are people working on a fix. At the moment, it may be difficult to remove since “Permanent removal usually fails”. Interestingly, it’s Gigaget’s servers that are delivering the malware as an update.

Some good news though. The malware only attacks the older Gigaset phones. More information are expected to be released by the company so let’s wait and see.

Gigaset isn’t exactly fully to blame here. The hackers are believed to have gotten into the update servers of Gigaset to deliver the Trojans. But then this means Gigaset isn’t that secure.

If you own an older Gigaset smartphone, you can check HERE and see how to wipe the malware. You need to do some uninstalling but only if you know how.

Here’s what Gigaset Senior Vice-President for Communications Raphael Dörr said:

We take the issue very seriously and are working intensively on a short-term solution for the affected users. In doing so, we are working closely with IT forensic experts and the relevant authorities. We will inform the affected users as quickly as possible and provide information on how to resolve the problem.

We expect to be able to provide further information and a solution within 48 hours. It is also important to mention at this point that, according to current knowledge, the incident only affects older devices.

The company executive also mentioned the phones not…
