Internet services on mobile devices suspended in Kashmir on Republic Day

Suspension of mobile phone and internet services on Republic Day and Independence Day has been a part of the security drill in the Valley since 2005

Internet services on mobile devices were suspended in Kashmir on January 26 as a precautionary measure for ensuring smooth passage of Republic Day celebrations in the Valley, officials said.

However, mobile phone services and internet on fixed lines remained unaffected.

“The mobile internet telephone services have been temporarily suspended in the valley for ensuring peaceful Republic Day celebrations,” the officials said.

Suspension of mobile phone and internet services on Republic Day and Independence Day has been a part of the security drill in the Valley since 2005 when terrorists used a mobile phone to trigger an IED blast near the venue of Independence Day celebrations.

The services are usually restored in the afternoon following culmination of official functions across the Valley. Republic Day celebrations were held amidst tight security arrangements in Srinagar City and elsewhere in the valley. Officials said here were no report of any untoward incident from anywhere in Kashmir.

Czech Republic turns to war-games to build cyber defences

The Czech Republic is carrying out war-gaming exercises with companies to strengthen its critical industries against cyber attacks, supply chain disruption and ownership bids by hostile states such as China and Russia.

The war-games, thought to be the first such contingency exercises in the world, have drawn the attention of Nato allies seeking to protect themselves from aggression in the so-called “grey zone” between peaceful relations and formal armed conflict. Concern about grey zone activities have intensified since a significant hacking campaign against US government systems — attributed to a Russian group — was discovered in December.

Tomas Kopecny, deputy minister for industrial co-operation in the Czech Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces, has started contingency exercises with the country’s five largest defence companies and hopes to expand the programme to other industries including energy, IT, healthcare and food production later this year.

“We see industrial policy as part of not only economic welfare, but geopolitics and also defence and security”, Kopecny told the Financial Times. “This exercise is basically about creating [a] nexus between the military and civilian, between the government and private side.”

He added that the rise of China as a “systemic rival” to the EU meant industry was increasingly on the front line of attempts by foreign investors to steal intellectual property or exert control over competitor companies.

“The very strategy that is being applied by Chinese state-affiliated investors is something that is targeting [Europe’s] critical and strategic technologies,” Kopecny said. “It’s definitely something that is decreasing our capability to defend ourselves, through us losing our technologies that are essential for defence.”

The UK government had to intervene last year to prevent an investor linked to the Chinese state from seizing control of the board of British chipmaker, Imagination Technologies. The FT has also revealed that China is exploring limiting the…

News: Cyber Incident Response Capability established in the Republic of Moldova with NATO support, 21-Jan.-2021

Today (21 January 2021), NATO inaugurated a new Cyber Incident Response Capability for the Moldovan Armed Forces. This capability was established with support from the NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme and in cooperation with the NATO Information and Communication Agency (NCIA) through a multi-year project. It will help to minimize any threat resulting from cyber incidents, provide quick and efficient recovery and prevent similar incidents in the future. The inauguration was marked through a virtual ribbon-cutting ceremony.

At the event, NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană remarked: “NATO and Moldova have been partners for more than 25 years. Our cooperation supports Moldova’s efforts to reform and modernize its defence and security structures and institutions, in full respect of Moldova’s constitutional neutrality.” “The new Cyber Incident Response Capability established with support from the NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme is an excellent example of NATO’s commitment to this partnership, “he added.
Addressing participants from Chisinau, the Minister of Defence of the Republic of Moldova, H.E. Victor Gaiciuc, said: “With the finalization of this important project, we took a step forward towards increasing our cyber defense capabilities. The establishment of the Cyber Incident Response Center of the National Army of the Republic of Moldova will increase the Ministry of Defence’s posture and capacity to respond to cyber threats.

The NATO Information and Communication Agency provided critical technical advice for the design of the cyber laboratory and the supporting physical IT infrastructure. The Agency Chief of Staff Major General Göksel Sevindik pointed out: “We are proud to collaborate with partner nations such as Moldova to prepare them for the cyber challenges they may face in the future. Cyber security is a team sport. We must use our collective knowledge to ensure the security of our Allies and partners.”
