Two people and suspect have died following Sunday shooting in Security

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and the Colorado Springs Police Department say they are no longer searching for a suspect that was wanted in connection with a shooting that claimed the life of a deputy on Sunday.

At approximately 5:07 p.m., the shooting happened in the 500 block of Ponderosa Drive in Security.

Sheriff Bill Elder told reporters that two deputies and an officer with the Fountain Police Department arrived at the scene and were immediately met with gunfire.

The officers returned fire and 39-year-old Deputy Andrew Peery was struck in the exchange. Despite life-saving measures, Deputy Peery later died of his injuries.

While on the scene, officers located a deceased woman in the 500 block of Ponderosa Drive.

Witnesses in the area weighed in on what they saw the evening of the shooting.

“I saw two cop cars there and then I went to go look 20 minutes later and there was SWAT and everything down there,” said Adrian Burciaga, a neighbor.

Terry Hampton, another neighbor said he witnessed the deputy trying to pull Peery to safety after he was shot.

“After he (Peery) got shot and hit the ground, the guy (Deputy) got behind the tree, and then when the guy (Paz) went in, he (Deputy) went over and grabbed the guy (Peery) and tried to pull him back over to where he was at,” said Hampton.

Hampton also said that this incident was unusual in the neighborhood.

“We’ve had shootings here before, we’ve had drive-by’s on houses, but that was a long time ago, nothing like this,” said Hampton.

Finding the right words to describe the tragedy that took place yesterday is impossible. As the chief of police and as a member of this community, my heart breaks for the two families who have lost loved ones and for the children who have lost a parent. From the community members who called for help, to the deputies, officers, and investigators who responded to the shooting, we are all left incredibly shaken. These tragedies are things I wish did not happen in our community; in the place all of us call home. When these types of horrific acts happen, there is nothing we can do to fully rebuild what was lost or to replace those who are no longer with us.

Jacksonville mom ‘didn’t know son’s Xbox could connect to social media’ after he threaten day care shooting, police say

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville teenager was arrested Friday after police said he threatened to shoot up a daycare center in San Marco. Investigators said he posted the threat on a gaming chatroom using his Xbox.

After police spoke to the teenager’s mother about what her son did, she told police she had no idea her son could use his gaming system to communicate on social media.

To many parents, an Xbox is just a gaming system. But in reality, the Xbox is a computer much like a desktop hard drive.

An Xbox is a gaming system that can be linked to the internet to download games and movies, and even connect to social media. This was evident when Jacksonville police showed up at an apartment inside this Northside complex and arrested a 15-year-old boy.

That’s when the boy’s mother told police she had no idea her son’s gaming console could connect to social media.

News4JAX spoke with cyber security expert Chris Hamer who said this should be a wake-up call for all parents who are not computer savvy.

“Parents need to be aware that these consoles are fully-fledged computers with the capacity of surfing the internet and communicating in both directions,” Hamer said. “That issue is if you leave your child alone with an Xbox or PlayStation, not only can they present a credible threat to the outside world but they can also be groomed by people who deliberately go into the chatroom, game rooms, and the lobbies for these different programs to find their next victim.”

So in addition to monitoring your child’s activity on the home computer or smartphone — parents are being urged to monitor their kids’ activities on gaming consoles.

Hamer said while parents may not be too computer savvy, kids who are caught posting threats online are also not as computer savvy as they may think.

“The individuals that are making less than intelligent decisions as to their activities online may or may not be aware that their IP addresses can be tracked right to their provider and thus to their house,” Hamer said.

One tip parents should know is that it doesn’t matter if you’re using a home computer, a cell…

Mobile County Public Schools won’t play at Ladd-Peebles Stadium again after shooting

Mobile County schools will no longer play football games at Ladd-Peebles Stadium after a shooting there eight days ago, the spokeswoman for the system told AL.com today.

“Mobile County Public Schools is investigating all of the details of last week’s shooting at Ladd-Peebles Stadium and are willing to make whatever changes are necessary to improve our security plans,” Communications Director Rena Philips said in an email. “The first big change we are making is that we will no longer play football at Ladd, nor hold our graduation ceremonies there.”

The shooting happened at a game between Vigor and Williamson high schools on Oct. 15. Shots were fired on the stadium’s west concourse during the third quarter. Police said a group of people left the stadium and re-entered with guns. One opened fire injuring five people, one critically. Two people have been arrested and police are seeking the alleged gunman, 19-year-old Hezekiah Kaniel Belfon.

The school system and the stadium management have differed on who is responsible for the failure to keep the stadium safe.

Ladd-Peebles shooting: Stadium, schools dispute security responsibility

Philips said Mobile schools had already moved games that were scheduled for Thursday and Friday this week, as well as for games next Thursday and Friday and for playoff games.

In 2019, nine people were injured by gunfire at a LeFlore-Williamson game at Ladd-Peebles.

In May, the Mobile County Board of School Commissioners unanimously approved the hiring of an architect to design five new on-campus high school football stadiums at Vigor, Davidson, LeFlore, Williamson and B.C. Rain high schools.

Mary G. Montgomery, Baker, Alma Bryant, Theodore, Blount and Citronelle already have on-campus stadiums.

That will leave only Murphy without its own stadium. The Panthers are landlocked in a residential neighborhood.
