CES 2016: FCC Chairman Wheeler predicts an ‘extravaganza’ at wireless spectrum auction

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler is clearly excited.

In a one-on-one interview with Consumer Technology Association president and CEO Gary Shapiro at CES in Las Vegas today, Wheeler spoke colorfully about the upcoming spectrum auction, promising a “spectrum extravaganza” and hinting at a more wide-reaching auction than some have predicted

In March, the FCC is expected to launch the first rounds of a complex nationwide auction in which wireless carriers can bid to acquire spectrum owned by TV broadcasting stations, which would bolster their networks to help meet demand for mobile broadband. With the exception of Sprint, which has announced that it will not bid for spectrum (it acquired a large stock of spectrum in its 2012 acquisition of Clearwire), the auction is expected to attract many wireless service providers and even other companies like Google that have a vested interest in acquiring spectrum.

Gigabit cellular networks could happen with 24GHz spectrum, FCC says

Even The Flash can’t deliver gigabit speed data networks.
JD Hancock

The Federal Communications Commission is starting to plan for cellular networks that can send users gigantic streams of data, but there are technical challenges to be solved and years of work ahead.

A Notice of Inquiry issued unanimously by the commission on Friday identifies frequencies of 24GHz and above as being able to provide gigabit or even 10Gbps speed. This would be a major change because today’s cellular networks use frequencies from 600MHz to 3GHz, with so-called “beachfront spectrum” under 1GHz being the most desirable because it can be used to deliver data over long distances. AT&T and Verizon Wireless control the most beachfront spectrum.

“It was long assumed that higher spectrum frequencies—like those above 24 GHz—could not support mobile services due to technological and practical limitations,” the FCC said in a press release. “New technologies are challenging that assumption and promise to facilitate next generation mobile service—what some call ‘5G’—with the potential to dramatically increase wireless broadband speeds.”

More Wi-Fi is better: FCC expands use of 5GHz spectrum

Jason Alley

In a unanimous vote, the Federal Communications Commission has agreed to expand the amount of the 5GHz band that Wi-Fi takes up by 100MHz. In short, our wireless connections are about to get a lot better.

With this change, the agency says that Wi-Fi routers will be able to handle more traffic at higher speeds. At present, Wi-Fi only occupies part of the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

In January 2013, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski promised that the agency would free up 195MHz within the 5GHz band to alleviate the “Wi-Fi traffic jam.” The organization did so shortly thereafter.
